Halych (Russian and Ukrainian: Галич) is a historic town in Western Ukraine on the Dniester River.
Today Halych is a small town and a seat of Halych Raion (district) of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (province), located 26 km to the north of Ivano-Frankivsk.
Also of interest is an equestrian monument to Danylo of Halych, opened in 2003 to mark the 750th anniversary of that prince's coronation as the king of Ruthenia.

Halych-Volhynia was created by Prince Roman the Great of Volodymyr-Volyns'kyi after he conquered the Principality of Halych and united both lands into one state at the end of the 12th century.
Danylo defeated the Polish and Hungarian forces in the battle of Yaroslav (Jarosław) in 1245, but at the same time he was compelled to acknowledge, at least nominally, the supremacy of the Tatar Golden Horde.
King Casimir the Great of Poland took Halych, Belz, Kholm, Podolia and part of Volhynia; Gediminas of Lithuania took the remaining part of Volhynia and Podlachia.

It revived somewhat toward the end of the 19th century with the construction of a railway line linking it with Lviv, Stanyslaviv, and Chernivtsi.

On 5 September 2003, a scholarly conference entitled “The Ukrainian Church and State in the Light of Two Jubilees: the 700th anniversary of the Halych Metropolitanate and the 750th anniversary of the coronation of King Danylo of Halych” was held in western Ukrainian Ivano-Frankivsk.
The Halych Metropolitanate is a church province established in 1303 on the territory of the Halych and Volyn state (now in parts of Poland, Belarus, and far western Ukraine).
Patriarch Athanasius of Constantinople and Byzantine Emperor Andronicus ratified the establishment of the metropolitanate on the basis of the Halych episcopacy.

Halych-Volhynia was created by Prince Roman Mstislavich of Volodymyr-Volhynia after he conquered the Principality of Halych and united both lands into one state at the end of the 12th century.
With the help of wealthy burghers, some loyal boyars and Polish princes, he created a relatively strong power, subjecting Kiev to his domination and increasing Ruthenian influence in Lithuania.

Danylo of Galicia (Ukrainian: Данило Галицький, Danylo Halyts’kyi), (1201-1264) was the 1st King of Galicia, Knyaz of Halych (1205–1206, 1211–1212, 1229–1231, 1233–1235, 1238–1255), Peremyshl (1211), and Volodymyr-Volynsky (1212–1231).
After the boyars proclaimed one of their own as prince in 1213, the Poles and Hungarians invaded the principality, ostensibly to support the claims of young Danylo and Vasylko, and divided it between themselves.
On 17 August 1245, Danylo defeated a combined force of the Prince of Chernihiv, disaffected boyars, and Hungarian and Polish elements at Yaroslav and finally took the remainder of Galicia, thus reconstituting his father's holdings.

The town was first chronicled in 1234 as Grad Mersky (i.e., the Town of the Merya).
