Lviv history — Lviv Ukraine tourist guide
Halychyna was a highly developed economic and cultural region.
In 1914-1918, Halychyna, as a part of Austria-Hungary, participated in World War I. In November 1918, the Western-Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed, but the leading European countries had no intention to accept the right of the Ukrainian nation to have its independent state.
In Halychyna, the military opposition of the UPA against the Soviet occupation regime continued till the mid-50s.

Hunczak speaks on his research regarding Halychyna prior to World War I (08/08/04)
Underlying the political confrontations in Halychyna, said Dr. Hunczak, was the election law, which was the antithesis of the one-man-one-vote rule.
The administration in Halychyna, which was in Polish hands, continued Dr. Hunczak, tried to stem the drive toward election reform by forbidding such meetings, sometimes canceling hundreds of them at a time, and by resorting to police violence.
Equally futile were the efforts by the Polish administration in Halychyna to stop the activity of the Ukrainian youth organizations Sich and Sokil, which instead grew into a significant political force by uniting much of the rural youth.

This partly explains why in some counties (povity) of Halychyna, no UNS units at all were formed, while in Stanyslaviv province (oblast), a particularly large number of OUN members entered the UNS.
The most important actions of the UNS units against the Germans took place in the Carpathian Mountains in 1943: involving the "Haydamaky" battalion on September 26-29, the "Chorni Chorty" battalion on November 27, and the "Kryvonis" battalion on November 30.

The embroideries of Podillia were similar in many respects to that of both Bukovyna and Pokuttja, with discreet yet recognizable differences in color scheme, motifs and placement that nonetheless set them apart.
Halychyna, also known as “Eastern Galicia”, in Western Ukraine, boasts a variety of embroidery styles that were specific for individual localities and/or micro-regions.
An excellent example of this phenomenon would be needlework done in the traditional Yavoriv, or Sokal, styles; when one sees such a piece of embroidery there is no mistaking its origin.
