Hamamelidaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hamamelidaceae is a family of flowering plants in the order Saxifragales, including 27 genera and about 80-90 species, all shrubs and small trees.
In older classifications such as the Cronquist system, the family was treated in a separate order Hamamelidales.
The genera Altingia, Liquidambar (sweetgum) and Semiliquidambar, previously included in the Hamamelidaceae, are now treated in the family Altingiaceae.

 Saxifragales
Cercidiphyllaceae + Daphniphyllaceae + Hamamelidaceae + Altingiaceae: cuticle waxes as tubules, nonacosan-10-ol the main wax; valvate anthers with protruding connectives, but there is little evidence that they form a monophyletic group.
Hamamelidaceae are trees or shrubs that may be recognised by their often stellate or tufted hairs, their strongly stipulate leaves which often have ± palmate venation, their smallish flowers borne in rather dense inflorescences, and their bivalved, loculicidal and septicidal capsules with rather large seeds that have a hard, shiny, bicolored testa.
Endocarpial cells are thickened and elongated transverse to the long axis of the fruit, and they look almost palisade in tranverse section of the cells.

Beginning with these lectures, we cover a number of plant families that belong to the "eudocot" clade.
The first plant family we discuss — the Hamamelidaceae — belongs to the order Saxifragales.
Within the three families discussed here — Hamamelidaceae, Moraceae (including Urticaceae), Betulaceae, and Fagaceae — note the following generalities (with some exceptions in the Hamamelidaceae).
