Latke-Hamantasch Debate Becomes Verbal Food Fight   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The hamantasch was supported by Jonathan Lipman (history and Asian studies), Kevin McCaffrey (communications office), and Susan Scotto (Russian).
McCaffrey proclaimed the hamantasch's influence on jazz music, as exemplified by the triangular arrangement of many jazz trios and Thelonious Monk's song "Brilliant Corners." Scotto, sporting a hamantasch-shaped G-string over a bodysuit, argued in double entendre the suitability of hamantasch for a women's college, based on the pastry's shape.
(She compared it to her triangular G-string.) Lipman related the hamantasch to similarly shaped Chinese characters meaning "humankind is one," arguing that this lofty linguistic heritage makes the hamantasch the more suitable model for a forward-looking society.

The English-language sources surveyed are pretty much unanimous in describing the hamantasch as the main food for the holiday.
The "levivah" is similar to the Hamantasch: a filling wrapped in dough; perhaps the sharing of Hamantaschen reflects a non-meat continuation of this traditional food.
Comparing hamantaschen to Christmas trees and lights, we note that the hamantasch is far more intrinsic: it is the most traditional component of the sharing and eating of portions; it recalls both the Purim story and the directive to destroy the memory of Amalek, as well as reflecting the traditional happiness of the Purim season.

There have been dissertations on "The Hamantasch in Shakespeare" and "The Hermeneutics of the Hamantasch;" feminist critiques that take both sides (Judith Shapiro, now president of Barnard College, suggested that Haman was a transvestite, "his aggressive machismo" overcompensation); and odes like this one by the linguist Edward Stankiewicz:

Three sides and many flavors - The Boston Globe
Another theory dates back to medieval Europe, where mohntasch (German for "poppy seed pocket"), a triangle-shaped pastry made from yeast dough and filled with poppy seeds, was very popular.
The German word "mohn" (poppy seed) was so similar to the Hebrew pronunciation of Haman's name ("Hamohn") that the pastry was renamed hamantasch, meaning "Haman's pocket." The triangular shape came to represent Haman's pockets, in which he routinely carried bribes.
Some Jewish scholars have said the three corners symbolize the three patriarchs -- Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob -- whose righteousness saved their descendants from Haman's plot.

As the law expert, Eugene Kontorovich, said, "What's great about the Latke-Hamantasch Debate is that at a time when so much academic inquiry is spent on esoteric and irrelevant matters, the debate focuses on the big questions."
These and other profound ponderables have made the debate a sacred, if silly, annual tradition at the superserious University of Chicago since 1946, chronicled in a new anthology, "The Great Latke Hamantasch Debate" (University of Chicago Press).
