Hamburg, SC enjoyed a brief success as an upriver trading point, but the Augusta Canal (1848) and Greenville & Columbia Railroad (1851) undermined its position.
Habitation became completely pointless after Augusta's construction of a protective levee in 1915; Hamburg, remaining defenseless, was swept away for good in the massive double flood of 1929.

It is presently located down river from North Augusta, SC on the opposite side of US Highway #1....Augusta Concret Block and TTX Hamburg Industries are presently located on the spot where the old town sat near the river.
It is possible that he may have been dead by then in which case the wife and daughters would have most likely gone back upstate.

In the early to mid 1800's Hamburg was a thriving community just across the Savannah river from Augusta, GA. There is an extensive section of the "History of Edgefield County" by Chapman dedicated to Hamburg.
The Charleston railroad ended at Hamburg, (at the time thelongest railroad in the world) and the freight was offloaded and ferried across the Savannah River.
There is some debate as to whether Hamburg was named for Hamburg, Germany by Mr.
