As of 2004, the city has been enjoying the benefits of rapid growth without yet suffering related negative consequences, though traffic congestion is increasing at a faster rate than population growth, unaided by the fact that State Highway 1 runs through the city's urban area.
Hamilton is home to more than 25,000 tertiary students, mostly enrolled in one of the city's two main tertiary institutes, the University of Waikato and Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology).

 EW City Seeks Extension to Sort Plant Problems
Hamilton City Council has asked Environment Waikato for a 12 month extension to allow it to comply with resource consents for its new $28 million wastewater treatment plant.
A two-stage consent was issued by the Regional Council in September 1998 to allow Hamilton City to commission the plant and discharge treated wastewater from the new plant to the Waikato River.

 Cyclists front up in Hamilton trial
Hamilton cyclists are being put front and centre in an intersection trial aimed at reducing bike crashes in the city.
The council's road and traffic manager Peter Bielby said the trial was based on a British system that had successfully reduced cyclist crashes for several years.
Cyclists are over-represented in Hamilton's crash statistics, accounting for nearly 10 per cent of all casualties in 1997 and eight per cent last year, compared to the New Zealand average of about five per cent for both years.

Council may not always be right, and perhaps they can be forgiven for that, but it sure would be refreshing to hear them to admit where wrong to launch legal action against well-meaning citizens.
The City of Hamilton has the ability to address this situation with an appropriate statement to the community and these well-meaning young people do not need to be punished by the heavy hand of City Hall.

HAMILTON — Proposed changes impacting the city's standards for residential design and the construction of new single-family homes will make their first appearance before the Hamilton City Council this week.
