The Hume Highway travels through the states of New South Wales and Victoria and got its name in the 1920s during a nationwide highway naming scheme.
The road is named after Hamilton Hume, a famous explorer in the early 19th century who in conjunction with William Hovell first found an overland route between Sydney and the infant colonial outpost of Port Phillip[?], the original name of Melbourne.
The Hume Highway is part of the National Highway system spanning Australia, and is signed as National Highway 31 in NSW and National Highway M31 in Victoria.

From Revolution to Reconstruction: Biographies: A. Hamilton 19
Hamilton was often mistaken as Washington's prime minister by foreign visitors; in fact, because of his close advisory position to the President, he in essence was.
Hamilton was greatly influenced by the great 18th century Scottish economists, primarily David Hume, who considered the consequences and possibilities of the merger of their comparatively backwards, agrarian country with Britain, whose economy was largely mercantile.
Hamilton dismissed Hume's warnings and instead focused on the positive aspects of national credit; the continuing vitality of the British economy was enough to prove the efficacy of their system.

He seeks to trace the steps by which we pass from statements about particular facts to general truths, and also to justify the transition: though he is more convincing in his psychological account of the process than in his logical justification of its validity.
In Mill’s case, as in Hume’s, this has to be done on the assumption that the immediate object in experience is something itself mental, and that there are no à priori principles determining the connections of objects.
In his doctrine of terms and propositions, Mill emphasises the objective reference in knowledge, although he cannot be said to meet, or even fully to recognise, the difficulty of reconciling this view with his psychological analysis.

It was during this week, in the year 1797, that Hamilton Hume was born, near Parramatta in New South Wales, Australia but it was in October of 1824, that Hamilton Hume and his companions set out on the expedition that, more than any other, gave colour to Australian history.

Hume announced that, although they had carefully blazed the trail by which they had come, he did not propose to follow the same path on his return.

Scottish Philosophy in the 19th Century (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Hamilton's writings are extensive but arguably his views can be adequately ascertained from three long essays which appeared in the Edinburgh Review—“The Philosophy of the Unconditioned” (1829), “The Philosophy of Perception” (1830) and “Logic” (1833), subsequently republished in a collection of his writings.
Hamilton too holds that there is no reasoning process here, but he also thinks that the continuing division that Reid is employing between sensation and perception is incompatible with the idea of immediate perception or direct realism between.
Hamilton's writings in general tend to assertion more than argument, and while he has a great deal to say on this point, it does seem that his “solution” to the problem of perception is a an arbitrary stipulation designed to overcome it.
