In 2001, the Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth fell victim to the Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris policy of "downloading" and amalgamating, whereby to cut government costs, the Provincial governemnt 'downloaded' formerly Provincial responsabilities to regions and municipalities.
The golden yellow Cinquefoil is a heraldic flower of five petals that is the badge of the Clan Hamilton and represents the name of the city.
The upper horizontal bar represents the Hamilton Mountain, the diagonal bar represents the escarpment, the lower horizontal green bar represents the lower City and the ultra marine blue portion of the bar represents the Harbour.

The arms of Ontario were widely used on flags, for, as they composed part of the official composite badge of the country before Canadian arms were granted in 1921, they appeared on the Governor General's flag, the Canadian Blue and Red Ensigns, as well as the flag of Ontario's Lieutenant Governor.
On April 14, 1965 a red ensign with the shield of the arms Ontario on the fly was adopted as the provincial flag by an act of the legislature.
The floral emblem of Ontario, the trillium, occurs with sufficient frequency on the governmental flags of the province that it deserves a separate discussion.

This is the oldest lighthouse in Ontario and second oldest in Canada, one of the oldest buildings in Toronto, and the oldest lighthouse on either side of the Great Lakes.
Pelée Island is accessible by ferries from Kingsville and Leamington, Ontario, and from Sandusky, Ohio.
Located at the end of Ontario Street at the east end of Killarney, adjacent to Killarney Provincial Park; the Friends of Killarney Park have a nice photo and keep an eye on the lighthouse.

The Hamilton Harbour Area of Concern (AOC) is a 2150 hectare embayment located at the western tip of Lake Ontario and connected to the lake by a ship canal across the sandbar that forms the bay.
Several urban centers, including the City of Hamilton (including Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Stoney Creek), the City of Burlington, and portions of the Regional Municipality of Halton and the Township of Puslinch are located in the watershed.
The Hamilton Harbour RAP is coordinated federally and consists of the Bay Area Implementation Team (BAIT) and the Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC).

Hamilton Harbour, an 2,150 hectare (5,313 acres) embayment, is connected to Lake Ontario by a single ship canal.
Hamilton and Burlington are the two largest communities in the watershed.
