The administrative centre of South Lanarkshire, Hamilton sits on the junction of Avon Water and the River Clyde.
Hamilton Old Parish Church is a fine Georgian building (1734), the only church to have been built by the architect William Adam.
The 2001 Census recorded a population of 48,546 in Hamilton, and the town is twinned with Châtellerault, in France.

However, it was not until 1732 that the 5th Duke of Hamilton (1703-43) actually had a new parish church built, up the slope beyond the 'Hietoun' about 0.4km south-west of the palace.
The only church known to have been designed by William Adam, what is now known as Hamilton Old Parish Church is laid out on a radial plan with four wings or aisles, in the overall shape of a stub-armed cross.
The medieval church was subsequently largely demolished with the exception of the east end and the attached aisle which served as the burial place of the ducal family.

Hamilton Old Parish Church has a history going back to the 6th century, to the time of St Mungo or Kentigern as he is more properly called.
This Church was itself demolished in the 1730's to enable the Duke of Hamilton's Palace to be enlarged.
The original entrance to the church was on the north-east side, facing the old town and Hamilton Palace.

Another highlight of the trip was attending a church service at "The Old Parish Church" in Hamilton where John Hamilton and Marion Hill were married on 11 Nov. 1759.
Prior to 1929, when the church had major restoration, the Duke would sit in his appointed seat and wave his finger at the minister if the sermon was not to his liking.
It was noted from the list of ministers in the church that at the time of John and Marion's marriage one of the ministers would have been Rev. Robert Hamilton.

The church does not possess records of marriages nor of those who are interred in the adjacent graveyard (last used in the early 1950s) nor of funerals conducted by the present or former ministers of the parish.
However, they do not hold cemetery records from Rutherglen Old Parish Church (and are unaware of the location of these records) nor do they hold birth, marriage or death records from 1855 onwards - these are available from the General Register Office for Scotland (see address below).
