Tioga County, a 6th Class County with population of 41,126, was created on March 26, 1804, from a part of Lycoming County and named for the Tioga River.
Tioga is derived from an Indian word meaning “the forks of the stream.” Wellsboro, the County Seat, was laid out in 1806 and incorporated as a borough on March 6, 1830.
Townships in Tioga County are comprised of three (3) Township Supervisors, who are elected to a six (6) year term.

 Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General
Corbett said a grand jury investigation began after the Pennsylvania State Police initiated an investigation into stolen trucks and heavy machinery throughout northeast Pennsylvania.  The investigation centered on three brothers, Gary Gerber Jr., Richard Gerber and Warren Gerber.
Corbett said the grand jury found that Warren and Richard Gerber, along with others who assisted them, stole commercial vehicles, tractor trailers, cargo loads and heavy equipment.  Their brother, Gary Gerber Jr., operated a scrap business at various locations and some of the stolen vehicles and loads were taken to Gary Gerber Jr.
Agents from Attorney General Tom Corbett's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation (BNI) have filed criminal charges against two Tioga County residents and a New York resident as the result of an ongoing investigation into the operation of methamphetamine labs in Tioga County.

A sharp steep anticlinal arch runs along the foot of the Allegheny mountain and brings up the Mansfield iron ore of Tioga and Bradford counties, compact, reddish brown, in red slate, very fossiliferous, full of fish teeth, dipping very steeply to the north, and 2` to 4` thick.
The whole surface of Lycoming County north of this line is scratched and covered with Drift.

According to the US Census of 1820, Tioga County has 70 slaves of which 32 are located in the Town of Caroline.
The Tioga Freeman is published in Owego; it is in support of "Free Trade and Free Labor" [AA The National Era, Washington, DC, May 25, 1848, #10582] Its first issue is May 2, but the office was destroyed by fire in September 1849 and ceased publication.
Tioga County's association with the Underground Railroad has a long history, but as is the case in so many other parts of the country, actual documentation and credible evidence for involvement can be very difficult to verify.
