Haminoea cymbalum is characterised by the bright orange spots and diffuse purple markings on the translucent greenish body.
All species of Haminoea are herbivorous, grinding their algal food, usually filamentous green species, but sometimes the Sea-lettuce Ulva, or the unicellular algal film which settles on the sandy-mud surfaces on which Haminoea is often found.

There have been three different spellings (Haminoea, Haminea, Haminaea) in usage for the same genus for over two hundred years.
The ICZN has finally settled on the correct spelling Haminoea.
Description : common on muddy flats and on eelgrass; the middle posterior part of the cephalic shield has an indent; brown or greenish-yellowi shell; large, barrel-shaped body whorl covered by a rust periostracum; involute (= sunken) spire; long aperture; outer lip gradually increasing in width; the snail cannot retract completely into its shell.

Haminoea callidegenita was described in 1989 from two localities in Washington state.
It has subsequently been reported from the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean, giving us reason to believe that this species has a propensity to invade estuaries at our latitude.

I haven't kept that species, but I have kept other species of Haminoea.
They're pretty unremarkable as far as grazing goes, but they're reef safe.
They probably live for about a year, and lay sausage egg masses containing many tiny eggs which hatch as free-swimming larvae.

Haminoea ovalis is characterised by a white or greenish body covered with numerous rounded yellow or orange, fl and purple spots.
Pretty similar is Haminoea cymbalum which has no fl spots or markings.
In general Haminoea ovalis looks rather dark, while Haminoea cymbalum looks pale.

I browse Live Aquaria every now and then to see what they have and came across the Harlequin Bubble Sea Slug (Haminoea cymbalum).
I've never seen these little guys for sale in the LFS.
They are way easy to take care than most nudibranchs.

that were abundant in San Francisco Bay were being called Haminoea callidegenita, perhaps incorrectly.
