He may have been poorly cast physically (Hamlet is supposed to be a teenage nerd, and Gibson was all of thirty-four when he did the movie), but he makes up for it with a giant performance which has a direct influence on every other factor contributing towards the movie.
Scenes involving Fortinbras, Hamlet's tale of pirates, and laser wielding monkeys (I think I just made that last one up...) are nowhere to be found in the movie, and this makes it flow better but it is a letdown for purists who consider cutting Shakespeare as a slap in the face.
Hamlet the movie captures the mood and the essence of the play, and that's what's most important.

Hamlet is a man who, in his youth, was a happy-go-lucky, jovial sort of man, and, now that he must mete out the revenge towards the new king, this man no longer exists, and when Gibson says this, I believed him.

This is Hamlet for a generation unaccustomed to the slower rhythms of theater, a cut-to-the-chase version for people weaned on television and cinema.
Gibson's Hamlet would've had more energy than other actors' even if the director had had him sprawled out in a La-Z-Boy across the entire 135 minutes; having him jog around the castle while waxing philosophical about the undiscovered country didn't add an iota of vigor.

I found the movie to be unconvincingly acted, completely out of order, and, to someone who hasn't read the play, it would probably be pretty confusing.
In addition to this, even though I approve of some of the cuts that were made (this is, after all, the Bard's longest play) some scenes appeared with no buildup whatsoever, and so served more to confuse than to move the story along.
Many of the scenes in which principal characters are introduced were removed, and this had the result of several characters simply barging into scenes and it was assumed we knew who they were and what they were doing.

The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is perhaps the most celebrated of all Shakespeare's plays, and for good reason: apart from its fascinating story of a young man fired with the desire for revenge, but torn by indecision, Hamlet is a showpiece for some of Shakespeare's most stunning writing.
It's amazing to watch Hamlet and realize just how many of the lines from this play have become famous, quoted and quoted again (and occasionally misquoted: if you hear a few phrases in Hamlet that don't sound the way you expect, be reassured that you're hearing them the correct way at last).
One of the most interesting things about Hamlet, in terms of its style, is how active it is. Director Franco Zeffirelli isn't shy about having his characters move from one location to another as they converse, and even the famous soliloquies are far from static.
