Villa Hammerschmidt became the official residence of the German President in 1951.
The villa lies in the heart of the former government district of Bonn, bordering to the north directly to the river Rhine and opposite to the zoological Museum Koenig in the south.
Villa Hammerschmidt was build in 1860 in neo-classical style as a stately home for a rich industrialist by August Dieckhoff.

He is well-known to Bonn inhabitants for the museum he built for his son opposite the villa, the very "Koenig's museum" where in 1949 the Parliamentary Council presided over by Konrad Adenauer ratified the Constitution.
Gorbachev was genuinely delighted with the close connections of his country with the villa's history and with the magnificent view of the Rhine that opened up from the terrace, which reminded him of the Volga landscape.

Earlier, Mr Narayanan was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Villa Hammerschmidt with full military honours upon his arrival in a presidential motorcade from the Petersburg Guest House in Sieberberge hills, Europe’s oldest nature reserve.
Interestingly, Mr Narayanan will be the last visiting head of state to be given a ceremonial welcome at the President’s official residence in Bonn as plans are afoot to shift it to Berlin in November, a German protocol officer said.

Alexander was born on February 8, 1858 in St. Petersburg but since 1867 grew up in Bonn where his father bought a villa at the bank of the river Rhine.
At that time the Villa Koenig (today called Villa Hammerschmidt) was situated at the outskirts of the city, while today it is in the middle of the administration district of the former capital of Germany.
Alexander Koenig was already interested in natural history as a boy and started early to collect birds and mammals.

From 1957, it was a secondary residence of the President of Germany, a pied a terre in Berlin in addition to his primary residence at the Villa Hammerschmidt in Bonn.
It was refurbished again in 1986/7, and Richard von Weizsäcker moved the primary residence of the President of Germany here in 1994, after the German reunification.
