Hammerstone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In archaeology, a hammerstone is a hard cobble used to strike lithic flakes off a lump of tool stone during the process of lithic reduction.
Often, a hammerstone is made of a material such as limestone or quartzite, is ovoid in shape (to better fit the human hand) and develops telltale battering on the ends.
This technology was of major importance to prehistoric cultures who had yet to learn to work metal; today, however, the use of hammerstones is mostly limited to flintknappers and others who wish to develop a better understanding of how stone tools were made.

“Hammerstone” is the archaeologist’s term for a hand-held stone that shows battering on one or more surfaces, from coming into contact with another hard object: presumably, the harder the object, the heavier the battering.
It was important for the hammerstone to be made of relatively hard material, so that it would not break when striking other objects.
Quartz, quartzite, and basalt make particularly sturdy hammerstones, but these materials are not available in all areas of California, and so stones like chert and sandstone also were used.

This involved hitting the stone with a hammerstone or pecking hammer to crush or crumble a small amount of stone from the potential artifact.
When the stone was struck with a hammer the point of impact resulted in a small "peck mark" where the hammerstone crushed a small area which was removed.
