While the main body of Hampden House is Elizabethan, the oldest part is the 14th century King John's Tower on the South side, of clunch (chalk and mud) construction with traciered Gothic windows and the remains of the original spiral staircase in one corner.
When the school left, the house was used by the Hammer Horror Group as a film set, which had a marked effect on the internal decor.
After that the house was left vacant: dry rot rampaged, stucco fell off and parts of the structure became dangerous.
