Hampshire County Council has won the backing of residents who do not want to see it abolished in favour of regional government.
Although over half of 1040 Hampshire residents interviewed by MORI (58%) believed a regional assembly would look after the interests of their area better than central government, notably fewer (45%) supported giving greater powers of government to regions in England.
However, opposition to the abolition of the County Council was higher among those who knew about the proposals (65%) than among those who knew little or nothing at all about them (50%).

In Hampshire County, one of the largest rural counties in the UK, social services workers were hampered in their ability to deliver vital services by the amount of time they were spending making trips between residences and council offices.
The County Council needed to expedite delivery of services by providing the staff with speedy, remote access to their centralized database, which would allow the staff to review cases and enter data from offsite locations.
Hampshire County's social workers are able to spend more time with their clients and less time traveling, because they can now enter data on site, at a nearby office location or even from home rather than returning to their offices.
