Hampshire won the toss and chose to bat at a Southgate wicket which the final scores suggested to be not as batting-friendly as a month ago, when 13 wickets fell in the Championship match between Middlesex and Glamorgan.
Hampshire Hawks had batted first, and no Hawk batsman converted their starts, and Gareth Clough's two for 44 threatened to stop their innings prematurely, as they were 152 for 6 when Kevin Latouf gave a return catch to Samit Patel.

Hampshire first played first-class cricket in 1864, and first competed in the County Championship in 1895, the sixth year in which the Championship was held.

Cricket is a team sport which is played between 2 parties of eleven cricketers each.
At each end of the pitch are stuck in the ground a set of 3 ligneous stakes which are known as stumps (traditionally manufactured from the ash wood), which, along with two smaller wood crosspieces titled bails, form the wickets.
Batsmen can also be out by other cricketer means, such as failing to guard the hurled ball from knocking the wicket, or hitting a grab to a outfielder or infielder.
