HAMPTON, VA -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia today sent a letter asking Hampton University officials to refrain from punishing seven students accused of violating school policies by distributing leaflets on campus.
According to news reports, on November 2, seven Hampton University students associated with Amnesty International were part of a student walk-out and teach-in on the issues of New Orleans urban renewal, the AIDS crisis, homophobia, the prison industrial complex, the war in Iraq and the crisis in Sudan.
Hampton University’s motto is "The Standard of Excellence - An Education for Life." In order to live up to this motto and maintain a standard of excellence, it is essential that the ideals of free association and free expression be not only tolerated, but wholeheartedly encouraged.

Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute became simply Hampton Institute in 1930 and gained university status in 1984.
Hampton's colors are blue and white, and their nickname is the "The Pirates".

On Friday, students at Hampton University who faced expulsion after being accused of violating university policy by handing out fliers focused on Hurricane Katrina, homophobia and other issues, were allowed to remain enrolled.
A statement released by the university after Friday’s student hearing struck students as contradicting the university’s latest actions: “Hampton University has always and continues to be a champion of free speech and free expression,” according to the statement, which was released Friday.
Hampton is one of only a few institutions in its area that doesn’t have an official gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender group on campus.

A prestigious journalism organization canceled a $55,000 grant to Hampton University after the school's administration confiscated the student newspaper for not running an item on the front page where the administration wanted it.
According to student journalists, the university confiscated the October 22 issue of the Hampton Script because a letter from Haysbert, the acting university president, didn't make the front page, as requested.
Soon, university staffers had removed newspapers from the Hampton Script's office, after students were ordered not to deliver the newspaper to campus distribution sites, students said.

Earlier that day an international student was subjected to intense interrogation by the Dean of Women and was told by the Hampton University police that she would be shadowed by a cop.
Some of the Hampton police who harassed us said that they just “had to do their job.” Just for clarification, their bosses are the University President Dr. William R. Harvey, who is a Bush appointee to the Federal National Mortgage Association, and a Board of Trustees bounteous with Bush-Cheney campaign beneficiaries.
