  Han chauvinism - Definition, explanation
Han chauvinism (大汉族主义) or Hanism (汉本位) is a highly pejorative term which is used in the People's Republic of China to refer to policies and viewpoints which favor the Han Chinese majority ethnic group in China at the expense of the other minority ethnic groups.
It often constructs enemies of Manchus, Mongols and subgroups of the Han nationality that oppose a monolithic view of the nationality, and emphasizes nostalgia in expansionary exploits by Chinese dynasties identified with the Han nationality.
In Taiwan, Han chauvinism refers to the tendency among the right-wing political elite to favour the culture and languages of Mainland Chinese over the native cultures of Taiwan, both Han and non-Han.

Chauvinism is extreme and unreasoning partisanship on behalf of a group to which one belongs, especially when the partisanship includes malice and hatred towards a rival group.
The term is derived from the undocumented Nicolas Chauvin, whose legend made him out to be a soldier under Napoleon Bonaparte whose fanatical zeal for his Emperor induced him, though wounded seventeen times in the Napoleonic Wars, to continue nevertheless to fight for France.
Chauvinism is an almost natural product of the national concept insofar as it springs directly from the old idea of the "national mission."...

It will be very dangerous if we fail now to give timely education and resolutely overcome Han chauvinism in the Party and among the people.
The problem in the relations between nationalities which reveals itself in the Party and among the people in many places is the existence of Han chauvinism to a serious degree and not just a matter of its vestiges.
Moreover, the newspapers should publish more articles based on specific facts to criticize Han chauvinism openly and educate the Party members and the people.
