		Han Chinese (Simplified Chinese: 汉族; Traditional Chinese: 漢族; pinyin: hànzú) is a term which refers to the majority ethnic group within China and the largest single human ethnic group in the world.
		Han Chinese all speak some form of the Chinese language; one of the Chinese names is Hanyu (Traditional Chinese: 漢語; Simplified Chinese: 汉语), literally the "Han language".
		Han Chinese speak many varieties of Chinese spoken language which are generally labelled as different Chinese dialects although the difference among them can be as great as seen in many European languages.

		The language spoken in Beijing is often referred to as Mandarin or Putonghua.
		Putonghua, which means "common language" is the country's predominant language and is widely used by more than 70 percent of the population.

		Haha that is absolutely right too and since there isn't a clear definition of what is a language or dialect i'll just have to stick to the fact that i believe Chinese is a langauge family and all the descendents are languages not dialects so i believe cantonese and mandarin are separate languages.
		Ancient chinese did speak chinese and what was evolved from that language became several spoken variations of Chinese (examples mandarin, cantonese, shanghaiese, hakka etc) all of those languages have dialects OF ITS OWN.....
		Second thing missing that is a trade mark of Han language is the M ending vowel.
