Hana-bi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HANA-BI was released under the English title Fireworks in the United States, but with its original Japanese title in other English-speaking countries.
The title is romanized with a hyphen as Kitano wanted to emphasize the duality of "flower" (hana) and "fire" (bi), the literal meanings of the characters that make up fireworks in Japanese.
The unexpected international success of HANA-BI, coupled with Sonatine's critical acclaim, established Kitano as a foremost Japanese filmmaker of his time.

Hana-Bi [1998] DVD at Shop Ireland
Hana bi is a very highly rated piece of cinema and its cinematography is very striking (if starting to look a little old being from 1997.)
The central idea and structure behind the film consists in moments of incredible serenity punctuated by acts of ludicrous violence from the protagonist- a brooding ex cop with a wife dying of a cancer in debt to the Yakuzas.
The contrast of hana (flower) and bi (fire) literally 'fireworks.' The central performance by Kitano is amazing in a James Stewart meets Harvey Keitel way.

Kitano Takeshi No Eiga - Films directed by Takeshi Kitano - Hana-Bi (1997)
Hana-Bi can be seen as the pinnacle of Kitano's gangster films to date, a fact that is implied in its title.
Hanabi is the Japanese word for 'fireworks', but Kitano has separated it here into its constituent parts: Hana (meaning 'flowers') and bi ('fire').
The dualism is obvious; it is a film about peace versus violence, powerful opposites coming together, the 'flowers' of love and understanding (a common visual motif in the film) and the 'fire' of repressed rage and sudden violence.
