Iwate Prefecture (岩手県; Iwate-ken) is located in the Tohoku region on Honshu island, Japan.
It was not until the end of the eighth century that the Nara authorities had penetrated deeply into Iwate, with Fort Shiwa, to the north of present day Morioka, constructed in 803.
Iwate faces the Pacific Ocean to the east, and borders Aomori Prefecture on the north, Akita Prefecture on the west, and Miyagi Prefecture on the south.

Hanamaki, in the Tohoku region, became a popular beetle center after the Kabutomushi Fureai Dome, a 600-square-meter dome on the banks of the Sarugaishigawa river, was established 10 years ago.
Managed and run by a local group, the dome is a center for breeding and selling beetles, as well as providing the public with an opportunity to observe the insects at close quarters.
The idea for the beetle haven was born in 1993, after particularly cold weather led to a devastating harvest.

 Rampaging bear strikes down four in Iwate
HANAMAKI, Iwate -- Four people, three of them elderly, were injured after a berserk fl bear attacked them here Monday before it disappeared back into the woods.
None of the injuries sustained were serious, but local officials are urging people in the area to be on the alert.
Members of the Hanamaki Municipal Government and a local hunting club are currently searching for the bear, which could be the same animal spotted near a hot springs resort over the weekend.
