Hanaro Telecom, South Korea’s second largest broadband service provider, has entered into a partnership with Japanese telecom equipment maker Kyocera to develop 3G wireless data communications technology.
Hanaro’s president Shin Yun — sik said the company would launch a commercial wireless local loop (WLL) service promising a data transfer speed of up to one megabits per second at its peak rate, using a 2.3 GHz bandwidth.
By the end of the year, the telecom hopes to expand its wireless LAN service into 15,000 centers across the country, while introducing a wide range of applications including a voice-activated data communications service.

Hanaro said Sunday it decided to end the negotiations after Thrunet was found to have signed a preliminary agreement with mobile phone company SK Telecom to sell off its leased service line operations.

South Korean broadband provider, Hanaro Telecom, which is one of the three license holders allowed to provide WiBro (SK version of fixed wireless) has decided to focus on wired broadband instead.
The WiBro rollout would have cost Hanaro about $800 million, which is a huge chunk of a change for a company that bought Thrunet for over $470 million and paid $117 million just to acquire the WiBro license.
