Nimrod Hurvitz | From Scholarly Circles to Mass Movements: The Formation of Legal Communities in Islamic Societies | ...
By the end of the ninth century, the Hanbalis were one of the largest movements in Baghdad, and most of its adherents lived in the Harbiyya quarter, which would become the Hanbali stronghold and center of their activism.
The Hanbalis have their own share of mildly ascetic practitioners of forbidding wrong, starting with Ibn Hanbal himself and moving to al-Barbahari, who was reputed to be an ascetic and the leader of groups that forbade wrong.
In contrast to the Hanbalis, who were intensely preoccupied with the doctrine of forbidding wrong in the ninth century and by the tenth century were implementing it in large groups led by al-Barbahari, the adherents of the other three Sunni madhahib were slow to articulate a doctrine and rarely forbade wrong in groups.

Although, he never met Ibn ‘Aqil, he did receive a fair amount of tutelage from his books, which left him perplexed about the orthodox doctrine of the Hanbali school; as reflected in his theological opinions that are often contradictory, and at times leaning towards allegorical exegesis (ta’wil) conflicting with the mainstream Hanbali position.
He was also an authority on Hanbali doctrine and a passionate opponent of the Ash’arites, but that did not prevent him from joining the military campaign of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, who was an Ash’ari, against the Crusaders in Palestine.
He was a Mujtahid in Hanbali Madhab, and was referred to by some as the leading authority on orthodox Islam (Imam Ahl al-Sunnah).

This proved to be historically significant, since the Hanbali doctrine remained the only school representing the views of the founders of the other three juristic schools, that later became dominated by Ash’arites or the Maturidis.
This abridgement became particularly famous amongst the Hanbalis from Najd, where it is regarded as the primer to the Madhab.
A scant reading of the Islamic history illustrates that the Hanbalis are known for having an outstanding character, fearlessness and eagerness for enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, with Imam Ahmad setting the precedence by remaining steadfast during the inquisition.

This includes if one were to validly pray a prayer in its appointed time, and then pray it again when the iqamah for the prayer is made while being inside the mosque; this prayer is called 'repeated' according to the Hanbalis, without there being any invalidity or excuse [for repeating it].
If performing an act of worship is required from every single individual, such as the five prayers, it is called fard `ayn (individual obligation); if it is like supererogatory actions, for example: the sunna associated with Fajr, then it is called sunnat `ayn (individual sunna).
Butlan and fasad (void, invalid) are synonymous phrases, each one of them being of the same meaning according to the Hanbalis and the Shafi`is, except that the Shafi`is differentiate between them in fiqh in [some] issues.

The Hanbali creed with regard to the attributes is one of textual affirmation, without delving into explaining anything of it or giving it any meaning.
Generally speaking, there have been a number of Hanbali scholars who have leaned towards tafweedh; yet, it would be unjust to call them pure mufawwidha, because they very often contradict themselves by affirming the dhahir — the obvious and apparent meaning — of the text.
For example, al-Saffarini, and other Hanbalis before and after Ibn Taymiyya went at lengths in negating jawhar (atom) and ‘arad (accidents) from Allah, which is essentially the bedrock of the jahmi-ash’ari philosophy, which they borrowed in-bulk from Aristotle.
