  The History of Hancock MD
Hancock is an ancient settlement that was once on the frontier edge of Maryland.
It is generally held that the name Hancock derived from Edward Joseph Hancock Jr., who operated the ferry here prior to his enlistment in the 8th Pennsylvania regiment.
The kilns and the foundations of the mill are still visible from the CandO Canal towpath and the new Western Maryland Rail Trail.

The following sequence of photos are of eastbound AJ-2 and westbound AJ-3 passing on the WM at Hancock, MD. My father happened to catch these two trains while he was taking photos on the B&O across the river in West Virginia and heard the WM trains approaching.
Looking west and east from the WM right-of-way at Hancock, MD. At this time no railtrail was planned, the right-of-way was closed to the public and only allowed to be used for emergency services.

Beginning about a half mile west of Fort Frederick State Park at the town of Big Pool, Md., in Washington County, the Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT) winds 20 miles westward along the Potomac River through rolling farmland and rural townships to its current western terminus at Polly Pond.
Construction began in 1996 on the first 10 miles of trail from Big Pool to Hancock, Md. This section was completed in 1998, and Hancock was the trail's westernmost point until June 2001, when the second 10-mile construction phase was completed.
Polly Pond, Md. is now the WMRT's western terminus, putting the small town of Hancock at the geographic center of the trail.

Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson marched north in bitter cold from Winchester to Bath with the objective of disrupting traffic on the BandO Railroad and CandO Canal.
On January 5, after skirmishing with the retiring Federals, Jackson’s force reached the Potomac River opposite the garrisoned town of Hancock, Maryland.
The Confederates withdrew and marched on Romney, in western Virginia, on January 7.

For over 150 years, this was one of many farms that used Maryland's waterways to transport produce to Baltimore and other ports.
Occupied by the Hancocks until 1962, it is an Historic Park in the Anne Arundel Park System, operated by the Friends of Hancock's Resolution (FOHR).
The latter is because archaeology has discovered a 3,000 year old Indian campsite on the farm.

It's the straightest way I've found and not counting traffic only about 4 1/2 to 5 Hrs.
I travel this route a lot when I head west on 70 from the hagerstown MD area and it takes me an extra 45-60 minutes depending on how many times I stop.
