The WMRT is owned and managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), State Forest and Park Service, Fort Frederick State Park, where a four-block downtown section is leased to the Town of Hancock for Maintenance of the downtown section of the trail.
The Town of Hancock is located near the halfway point of the 20-mile stretch of trail, representing an ideal location to capture commerce from trail user activity.
Hancock’s location along the WMRT is analogous to the old stagecoach or train “way station” located between two travel destination points, where stops were made to rest and/or acquire new provisions.

At Hancock, Maryland the Western Maryland had another stretch of double track used for the meeting and passing of trains.
The following sequence of photos are of eastbound AJ-2 and westbound AJ-3 passing on the WM at Hancock, MD. My father happened to catch these two trains while he was taking photos on the B&O across the river in West Virginia and heard the WM trains approaching.
Looking west and east from the WM right-of-way at Hancock, MD. At this time no railtrail was planned, the right-of-way was closed to the public and only allowed to be used for emergency services.

Beginning approximately one-half mile west of historic Fort Frederick State Park in Washington County, Maryland, the Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT) winds along the Potomac River through rolling farmland, woodlands, and rural towns to its terminus at the southern slope of Sideling Hill Ridge.
In August of 1990, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources acquired 20.3 miles of the abandoned segment of the Western Maryland Railroad Line, and the three lots in the Town of Hancock from CSX Transportation, Inc. The rail corridor was purchased with state-wide DNR Program Open Space funding at a cost of $1,042,000.
Two miles of the Western Maryland Rail Trail have been re-opened after recent rock slides that damaged a portion of the trail asphalt surface and scattered rocks and debris on the trail.
