The town was established in 1806 from part of the Town of Colchester.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older.

The Town Board investigated the possibility and found that according to the New York State Attorney General, the "unofficial opinion was that the land cannot be sold".
A lease was entered into between the Town of Hancock and Hancock Golf and County Club, Inc. The lease was to begin November 3, 1959 and end Nov 3, 1979 with an option for an additional 10 years ending Nov. 3, 1989.
Enthusiasm was generated for a new clubhouse and and the Hancock Golf and Country Club donated land they had purchased near #5 fairway upon which was constructed a new 2 story clubhouse, pro-shop and restaurant, complete with showers and a charter member room.

Origin: Hancock started as an unidentified settlement on the Contoocook River, in lands known as "Society land" or Cumberland, which had been reserved for the proprietors of the lands which became New Hampshire.
First settled in 1764, the town was named Hancock in 1779 in honor of John Hancock, first governor of Massachusetts, president of the Continental Congress, and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The 2004 Census estimate for Hancock was 1,802 residents, which ranked 144th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

The new town was named for the famed American patriot John Hancock, who owned 1875 acres in the town and was one of the wealthiest men in America.
There was constant litigation (including with the Town of Hancock which refused to pay the gratuity until mandated by the courts), worker strikes (sometimes so threatening that police were summoned from as far away as Nashua), cost overruns and frequent delays.
One of the first offical acts of the Town of Hancock was to authorize the calling of a "orthodox minister" and approving 216 pounds for his first year's salary.

Hancock's tune has a couple of swinging, funky sections, and the very end is unsettling and chilling, but by then you've sat through a lot of mind-numbing mood music.
