Hancock County, the eighty-third in order of formation, is located in the Western Coal Field region of the state along the Ohio River.
The county was formed on January 3, 1829, from parts of Ohio, Breckinridge, and Daviess counties and named in honor of John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The county's population began to shrink after 1890 because of soil erosion on hill lands, the lure of jobs in the booming cities, and new coal developments in other areas.

The northernmost county in West Virginia, Hancock County, was created by an act of the General Assembly on January 15, 1848 from parts of Brooke County.
It is the smallest county in the state (88.55 square miles) and was named in honor of John Hancock (1737-1793).
Hancock County was created in 1848 after an attempt to move Brooke's County Seat from Wellsburg (as it is then spelled) to the more centrally-located Holliday's Cove failed.

Hawesville, which is the Hancock County seat and the nearest town in Kentucky--about 3 miles southeast of the property--has a population of about 1,000.
The Hancock County High School and Middle School complex, on U.S. Route 60 about 1½ miles to the southwest of the site, was observed by ATSDR to be the nearest school in Kentucky.

The Hancock County tetrapod site has yielded fossilized remains of a diverse assemblage of Mississippian fish and tetrapods.
The Hancock specimen can be distinguished from other colosteids by its possession of thick osteodermal squamation that covers the dorsal surface of the specimen.
Among these more advanced tetrapods the osteoderms likely served to strengthen the vertebral column as these taxa were highly terrestrial and the osteoderms are closely aligned with, or articulate to, the neural spines.
