Mission Statement of the Hancock Park District is to create, preserve, protect, restore and manage a system of parks, nature preserves, and outdoor recreational facilities to be held in public ownership with a focus on local, natural, historical, and cultural resources and maintained for the leisure use, education and enjoyment of this and future generations.
Here in the Hancock Park District, September is an eventful month as the school year begins again for area students and field trips bring them to the parks for a variety of educational experiences to open young minds.
Float trips are a great way to enjoy the Old Mill Stream here in Hancock County for experienced or novice canoeists to view the flora and fauna along the river banks and listen to the quietness of the water with a patient and keen ear.

Hancock Park is a wealthy neighborhood in the Mid-Wilshire region of Los Angeles, California.
Hancock Park is bounded by Rossmore Avenue on the east, Melrose Avenue on the north, Highland Avenue on the west, and Wilshire Boulevard on the south.
Hancock Park was developed in the 1920s, by the Hancock family, with profits earned from oil drilling in the former Rancho La Brea (much of which is now the Miracle Mile district).

Wilshire Park's boundaries are roughly Crenshaw Boulevard on the west, Wilshire Boulevard on the north, Wilton Place on the east, and Olympic Boulevard on the south.

Hancock also bought and expanded the Santa Maria Valley Railroad, which was originally constructed in 1911 for transport of asphalt from a refinery at Betteravia to Guadalupe and the connection there to the main railroad line.
Hancock was born July 26, 1875, in San Francisco, one of three sons of Maj. Henry Hancock and Haraszthy's daughter, Ida. Not long after that, the family moved to Rancho La Brea.
Hancock was more than 30 years old and married with a daughter, Rosemary, and young son, Bertram, when he persuaded his mother to finance a wildcat well in a new spot.

In 1861 Hancock requested to be returned east for active duty, and he was commissioned a Brigadier-general of volunteers by General-in-Chief of the Army George B. McClellan on September 23 of that year.
The park was improved with new pavements, lawns, landscaping, and curbs in 1898-99.
The park was restored by 1936, at which time it included the statue, lawn, seven locust trees, and an iron picket fence.
