 The Comics Journal: Interviews
My parents lived through the comics witch-hunt of the '50s, and been left with the impression that comics were bad for kids, so we weren't allowed to have comics in the house.
The audience reading comics at the end of the '70s and the start of the '80s was largely used to a generally-positive status quo, an optimism and hopefulness in their comics, and a sense of the good-guy hero.
But sometimes it seems that comics is a vast field of possibility, with a large city in one corner of it where almost everybody lives, and a few scattered suburbs here and there.

These comics are based on the author's actual life, with characters representing people they interact with, either with the real-life people's names or pseudonyms.

The exclusionary view that art requires a certain skill level to produce is often described as a lay critique and derives from the fact that in Western culture at least, art has traditionally been pushed in the direction of representationalism, the literal presentation of reality through literal images.
On the other hand, criticism has often been brought to bear on modern artists for having no creative involvement whatsoever in their creations: one might take Hirst's work again as emblematic of this approach.
For example, Vasily Kandinsky developed his use of color in painting through a system of stimulus response, where over time he gained an understanding of the emotions that can be evoked by color and combinations of color.

 Coloring Comics - Adventure
In the past, comics were hand colored by creating a "color guide" (a print size photostat of the lineart).
The colorist would then hand this guide over to graphic artists, who would have to cut out pieces of halftone film by hand to represent colors for the final printing.
Comics collector and Photoshop user, he started his "adventure" in the art of coloring in the middle of 1999.

The core of comics, he argues, is in its unique portrayal of the passage of time and the way in which this portrayal engages the reader.
It describes McCloud’s vision for comics in the 21st century, and while it is a very good vision, it is one that (in a variety of forms) has been articulated by other comics creators and even by artists in other media.

I think the biggest difference between the stories I choose to tell as comic scripts and the stories I choose to tell as screenplays is in the ending, the conclusion of the storyline.
If, on the other hand, I think of a concept that really presents itself as a full story — something with a beginning, middle, and end — then I’ll think of that project in screenplay terms.
And as for directors, it’s easy to toss out names like “Peter Jackson,” but I’d also be interested in seeing what fresh, hungry directors would do with the material, directors who aren’t concerned with maintaining the brand quality of their name.

The underground comics of the previous decade had helped demolish some of the barriers to more adult work, and the emergence of “direct market” comics shops opened a niche for small presses, many of which were doing this kind of work.
Comics are not merely a collection of images, but a collection of images placed in deliberate — though not necessarily chronological — order.
Comics are well suited to that role because of the inherent narrative properties of the medium.
