Saw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A saw is a tool for cutting wood or other material, consisting of a serrated blade (a blade with the cutting edge dentated or toothed) and worked either by hand or by steam, water, electric or other power.
Saws break down into a number of different categories, all with the same purpose of accurately making larger pieces of wood into smaller pieces of wood.
A Hand saw uses either simply a blade thick enough to be stiff, or cuts on the pull stoke with reduces the stiffness requirement.

Hand saw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There were probably bronze saws in the time before steel making technology became extensively known and industrialized within the past thousand years or so.
Thus, crosscut saws have sawteeth that are usually shaped, often with a metal file, in such a way that they form a series of tiny knifelike edges. The wood cells (straws) are contacted by the knife-edge of the tooth and cut.
Rip saws, on the other hand, are usually shaped so that they form a series of tiny chisel-like edges.

 The Pleasures of a Pull-Stroke Saw - asktooltalk.com - Articles
The difference between the two saw techniques (pull vs. push) is rooted in the thinness of the blade metal which produces a narrower kerf (width of cut), thus the saw requires less effort to use.
Always start your cut by placing the saw at a 10º angle to the front or rear of the material (not at the 45º angle commonly (but incorrectly) used with a conventional saw).
If you are using a double-edged saw to cut a dowel and you do not want the teeth to scratch the finish surface, then you will need to knock the set down a little.

 How-to Hold and Use a Hand-Saw
In taking hold of the handle of a saw all the fingers except the first finger are passed through the loop of the hand-saw, or round the handle of the tenon saw; the handle of this kind of saw being somewhat differently formed.
In sawing down a plank on one or two trestles, as the case may be, the right knee and foot should be placed on the board, partly to keep the board steady and partly to keep the body of the operator steady.
This has the consequence of bending the saw too much to the left for the most part, and making the work difficult through the amount of friction that is caused by the blade and the saw cut being at an angle to the plane of the surface of the board instead of perpendicular to it.

 Hand Saw Basics
The saw on the right is 100 years old, the one in the middle is about 50 (circa WWII), and a hand made handle for a backsaw is on the top.
Because classic old hand saws can be found everywhere and are so cheap, I'd recommend a minimum of 3 - two at 10 TPI or so, one with a fine set for harder woods, and one with a coarser set for softer woods.
The saws are also usually crosscut saws, but a rip saw may be a better fit for the cheek cuts for a tenon.

Henry Disston and Sons Redesign the Hand Saw
The three saws introduced in 1927 were undistinguishable from their wider bladed counterparts as far as the handle fit and finish are concerned.
All the saws from this point on would be produced with straight or skewed backs, but the "nib" was dropped forever from straight back saws.
The saw blade was punched from steel that had a corresponding curve where it entered the handle.

Machine Guarding eTool: Saws - Handheld Saws
When using a hand-held saw, the blade should be directed away from the aisle and any people who are in close proximity to the saw.
Handheld jig saws are generally not considered to be as dangerous as other saws, however, contact at the point of operation can cause hand and finger injuries.
The operator is responsible for holding the jig saw with one hand while the other hand is used to secure the stock.

GROSSLY oversimplifying, hand tools tend to be less expensive, quieter, generate less saw dust (often in favor of wood shavings...), and take longer to use for a given task (especially for cases where there is a lot of repetition since often the major time consuming factor in using a machine is setup time).
If the saw has been sharpened a lot, sometimes a dip or bump in the height of the teeth develops, which should be corrected by "jointing" the saw.
Once adjusted for the pitch, the saw set is used to bend every other tooth one direction, the saw is reversed in the vice and the remaining unset teeth are set.

Hand saws for cutting wet or dry round logs have to have special tooth configuration.
All lumber saws that we have ever seen use a variation of a logger's crosscut pattern tooth (for example, a "perforated lance pattern") and are typically very long - even one-person saws.
Also pictured is the Japanese Timber Saw (It's the one with a straight handle and shorter blade.).

 Sharpening Hand Saws
A fairly recent "innovation" is that dovetail saws should be filed rip, since that is the direction in which they were cut, and recently more and more dovetail saws are being sold in this configuration.
This is because a rip saw leaves a rougher edge than a crosscut saw - you can get away with this when sawing with the grain, but not going across it (it's for much the same reason you need knickers in a dado plane, but not in a rabbet or grooving plane).
Using a rip saw invariably means you must use a marking knife of some sort to cut the edges of your dovetails - or use a backer - before you saw them, else you will get a ragged edge on the back side of the cut.
