SGML is a descendant of IBM's Generalized Markup Language (GML), developed in the 1960s by Charles Goldfarb, Edward Mosher and Raymond Lorie (whose surname initials also happen to be GML).
Another markup language originally created as an application of SGML is DocBook, designed for authoring technical documentation.
There are also a number of languages that are related in part to SGML and XML, but, because they cannot be parsed or validated or otherwise processed using standard SGML and XML tools, cannot be considered to be applications of SGML or XML.

HDML (Handheld Device Markup Language) (Linktionary term)
HDML was developed by Unwired Planet (now Phone.com) as a markup language for pocket-sized devices such as cellular phones and two-way pagers that conform to Internet standards and protocols, and that are constrained to a few lines of display, a limited keypad, and little memory.
Like HTML, HDML uses commands and statements that display information on a phone, provide input options for the user, and specify how the phone responds when the user presses keys.
An HDML drawback is that it is proprietary, although open for use.

In monochrome digital devices (both screens and printers), the thinnest line is the width or height of a pixel.
In color devices, the situation is less clear, because a color hue is produced by using more than one primary or process color simultaneously, each color being limited to the width or height of a dot or pixel; and the spatial relationship or separation between dots or pixels is also an influencing factor.
