  Oaklawn Jockey Club - First Timers: The Races
The main difference between an overnight stakes race and a stakes race is the amount of fees a trainer entering his horse in the race pays to compete.
Any horse entered in a claiming race is subject to purchase, for the amount for which the horse is entered, by any owner who has started a horse at that particular race meeting.
Races at Oaklawn are scheduled at distances from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 3/4 miles, which means a race could run anywhere from just over a minute to around three minutes.

The lowest level handicap race (where horses may be eligible even though they have won relatively few races) is known as a Class C Handicap, while the highest level handicap race (where horses are only eligible if they have won a number of races) is a Class A Handicap.

Qualifying stakes races are like other stakes races, in that there are restrictions and conditions that determine which horses can participate horses that are eligible for these races will earn Challenge points based on their performances (in addition to stakes money).

The Racing Secretary assigns weights to horses in a handicap race, with the horses who have accomplished the most according to their past performances carrying the highest weight, while the least competitive horses will carry a lower weight.

In an attempt to ensure a co-ordinated approach to races and as an extra incentive for members to participate in races, the club committee have selected 11 races, over varying distances, during the course of the year in which a club handicap race will be staged in conjunction with the race.
The winner of each handicap races receives an acknowledgement of their achievement in the form of a bottle of wine at the annual dinner/awards presentation.

The Fast Handicap racing was won by Teign sailor, Paul Craft in his RS Vareo ahead of the RS400 of Daryl Geary from Babbacombe Corinthian.
The second race was a little more clear cut for Murch with his new mast and sail as he enjoyed regular bursts of speed to take him to the front where he stayed.
In the second Handicap race it was young Daniel Craft (age 13) in his Laser 4.7 who caused another upset of the day with a third place to put him in third place overall in the series which is now at the halfway stage.

Some punters avoid these races because they just seem too hard, but bookies have the same problem too and offer odds slightly better than other handicap races.

In the division for swimmers aged 11 and under, Lucy Stokes swam a 15 second improvement from her previous best in May, to win the junior championship in a new record time of 5.30.46, way inside the county standard.
Emma Fitzpatrick showed enormous improvement in her stamina to finish second and Alice Parsons swam a focused race to take the bronze medal in a new best time which was also a county qualifying time.
In the senior championship, Lucy Bennion, 15, dominated the race with a long stroke and even pace, making it impossible for the younger girls to seriously challenge her.

With the wind gusting across the exposed sections of the circuit and scattering the whole circuit with debris and branches the women’s event had to be cut short and the youth event abandoned for safety reasons.
The women lined up facing the ever increasing windy conditions and the strong riding scratch group quickly worked their way to the head of the race.
The race officials agreed that conditions were getting too dangerous and cut the race short by about 5 laps although all agreed that the whole field had shown tremendous courage and skill in such appalling conditions.
