Ski Totes For transporting a single ski, the Michigan chapter of the National Handicapped Sports and Recreation Association (NHS) has developed the Three Tracker's Ski Tote, which was designed for skiers with amputation to carry the ski over the shoulder while using outriggers or crutches.

Through snow skiing it is possible for the disabled person to use these conditions to their advantage.
It's felt that skiing is of great therapeutic value to handicapped persons in that it allows then to participate and compete on the same level as their non-disabled counterparts.

Wendy Iseman, director of development at Maine Handicapped Skiing, said that throughout its 23-year history MHS programs have been free to handicapped individuals.
Other handicapped ski lessons around the country cost students as much as $200 for a few hours of on-snow instructions to cover expenses including adaptive equipment.
In his first season, as one of over 350 volunteers at Maine Handicapped Skiing, Salsbury has worked with a variety of students, from a 58-year-old stroke victim, to a hearing impaired 6-year-old girl, and a blind 25-year-old man.

An outrigger is a forearm crutch with a ski tip mounted on a rocker base, used to enhance the skier’s balance and control.

Maine Handicapped Skiing serves a range of physical disabilities; traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, hearing and vision impairment to spinal cord injuries and amputations.
To become a volunteer ski or riding instructor, one must be at least eighteen years old, be an intermediate or better skier or rider, and own his or her own skis or snowboarding equipment (ski bindings must be indemnifiable).
In the last five years alone, Maine Handicapped Skiing has developed a 20-person race team with individual coaches made up of experienced MHS participants who want to advance their skiing/riding abilities.

I used to have a blind roommate and we always used her handicapped parking permit to get the best spots.
I believe in some cases, it is sometimes possible to obtain a temporary handicapped parking permit with a doctor’s involvement.

Willy, often called "America's Most Successful Ski Coach," coached the DU Pioneers to 13 NCAA Ski Championship titles, and served as Alpine Director for the 1972 U.S. Olympic Ski Team during the Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, where his women skiers won a gold and bronze medals.
A native of Southern Germany, Willy is one of Colorado's ski legends, having been long ago enshrined in the U.S. National and Colorado Ski Halls of Fame.
During the 2003 European Championships for disabled in Prague, Czech Republic she won the 500m sprint and the road race, she was second in the 7.1km TT, and third in the 3km pursuit.

First presented in 1962, the award was created by the Canadian Ski and Snowboard Association in memory of John Semmelink, who lost his life while representing the Association in the Arlberg-Kandahar ski race on February 7, 1959 in Garmisch-Partinkirchen, Germany.
Johnston was the Founding President of the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing as well as the Founding President of the Alberta Amputee Ski Association in 1970.
He was instrumental in setting up the Japanese Handicapped Ski Association, and was the first Western Canadian President for the Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance from 1968-70.
