The Handley Page Hastings replaced the Avro York as the Royal Air Force's standard long-range transport from 1948.
The type was intensively used during 'Plainfare'; a Hastings made the last sortie of the Airlift on 6 October 1949.
Four Hastings were also delivered to the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Handley Page developed several large biplane airliners, including the 12 luxurious Handley Page H.P.42, for use on Imperial routes to Africa and India.
Handley Page also paid for the development of what soon became known as the Handley Page Slat (or slot), a small channel cut into the leading edge of the wing to improve airflow at high angles of attack.
One of the final notable Handley Page designs was the Jetstream, this was a small commuter turboprop aircraft, with a pressurised cabin and a passenger capacity of 12 to 18.

The Handley Page HP 67 Hastings was a troop-carrier and freight transport of the Royal Air Force.
The Hastings was developed at the same time as the Handley Page Hermes, but was introduced first as the Hermes prototype crashed.
The two squadrons equipped with Hastings flew intensively during the Berlin Airlift, and a Hastings made the last sortie of the airlift on October 6, 1949.

Handley Page, having produced the Halifax in many forms to serve the RAF in many roles, entered the post-war years with two projects, the HP67 Hastings military transport and the HP68 Hermes civil airliner.
Between 1948 and 1967 the Hastings was the major transport aircraft of RAF Transport Command, and for over 25 years served in one role or other in the RAF, RNZAF and the Ministry of Supply and its successors into the 1970s.
Handley Page's achievement both technically and commercially in respect of this final development away from the Halifax family, was born out of a real effort to get out of the tight strait-jacket of wartime military restrictions and to compete in the civil market.

Tracing its ancestry from the Lancaster, the Shackleton was used by Coastal Command for maritime recce, ASW and early warning during the 1950s and '60s.
Built using elements of the Halifax bomber, the Handley Page Hastings was inducted into RAF service in 1948.
Handley Page later used a Hastings as a testbed for Sapphire turbojet engines for its Victor V-bomber.

This was the first production Hastings aircraft and made its maiden flight on 25th April 1947, it had an underslung belly Paratechnicon, this became detached from the aircraft on 26th September 1949 hitting the tailplane resulting in the aircraft crashing at Beacon Hill, Wiltshire.
Now one of four preserved Hastings, this example at The RAF Museum Cosford is the only one remaining undercover and is therefore in prime condition.
C2 to be constructed on 11th October 1951 and was still active with the Royal Radar Establishment at Pershore, Worcestershire in 1972 and was finally retired on 30th September 1974 and used as a firedump Hastings at RAF Honington, Suffolk.

The elevator failed shortly after take off, although the Hastings gave valuable service one area that caused concern was the failure of the elevator bolts which resulted in several accidents, all fatal.

Designed to meet the requirements of Air Ministry Specification C.3/44, the Handley Page H.P.67 Hastings was a long-range general-purpose transport that served with both the RAF and Royal New Zealand Air Force.
The Hastings C.Mk 2 had Hercules 106 engines, a larger-area tailplane mounted lower on the fuselage and increased fuel capacity; all Hastings C.Mk 1s were modified subsequently to this configuration and were then redesignated Hastings C.Mk 1A.
The RNZAF's Hastings C.Mk 3s were generally similar to the Hastings C.Mk 2, but powered by Hercules 737 engines, and the RAF's Hastings C.Mk 4s were equipped to accommodate four VIPs and their staff.

Here I worked on Hastings, Bristol Freighter, and the station Harvard and Devon aircraft and with all the resident Squadrons, where we did flight line, 1st, 2nd and 3rd line servicing.

The Hastings was put into service in November 1948 and it was the largest plane the RAF used during the Berlin Airlift.
After the end of the Berlin blockade the Hasting were still used to Gatow until the 1970's.
These are Bristol Britannia, De Havilland DH106 Comet 4, Handley Page HP67 Hasting, HS Trident 2, Vickers Vanguard, Vickers VC10 and Vickers Viscount.

As you probably know, the Hastings aircraft involved in this tragic accident that we are remembering today, was operated by a crew from 36 Squadron from RAF Colerne.
Some of my colleagues from the Hastings era of 36 Sqn are here today and are members of the 36 Squadron Association, like myself.
All would have carried out similar flights during their time on the Squadron and we all grieve at the loss of our friends and the RAF and Army parachutists through a terrible accident caused by a technical malfunction of the aircraft.

Designed to replace the Avro York the Handley Page Hastings was the mainstay of RAF Transport Command for a decade and was developed as a long-range transport that served with both the RAF and Royal New Zealand Air Force.
TG528 was the 30th Hastings C1 to be delivered to the RAF and is in the colours of 24 squadron.
By 1968 the Hastings had left front-line service with the delivery of Hercules and Armstrong-Whitworth Argosy transports, but none found their way on to the civil market.

Pleased to learn of your interest in the Hastings era at Colerne.
I flew as a pilot on 24 Sqn from 1958 to 1963 and have fond memories of Colerne and the Bath area.
I'm not able to help you out with cockpit photo's, but understand that the Hastings at the Newark museum is opened up for visitors.

 Air Mails of New Zealand: The Overseas Flights - 1951-1960 (page9a)
The RNZAF entry, Handley Page Hastings C.3 NZ5804 (Wing Commander R.F. Watson) of No.41 Squadron flew to Lyneham, Wiltshire, via Singapore and Cyprus, arriving on 11 September.
A Hastings from No 40 Squadron, RNZAF, was flown from Whenuapai to RNZAF Station, Wigram where it picked up urgently needed medical supplies at the request of the Island Resident Medical Officer, Dr R.G. Howe.
The Hastings then flew to the Chathams where the medicines contained in a storepedo were dropped.

The airfield at Abingdon was opened in 1932, and in the years leading up to the Second World War was a base for bomber aircraft, including the Hawker Hind.
During 1944 the runways were built, and the Wellington X used for training which continued until 1946 when the airfield was transferred to Transport Command.
