The Handley Page Dart Herald was a British medium-range general purpose transport aircraft first flown in 1958.
The Handley Page Dart Herald was a high-wing cantilever monoplane powered by two Rolls-Royce Dart Mk.527 turboprop engines providing a cruising speed of 443 kmh and a range of 925 km fully-laden increasing to a maximum of 2770 km.
The Handley Page Dart Herald carried a crew of two and could be fitted to carry up to 47 passengers or 6033 kg of freight.

A contemporary of the BAe 748 and Fokker F-27 Friendship, the Handley Page Herald was an unsuccessful attempt at providing a replacement for the ubiquitous Douglas DC-3.
The Herald was designed by Handley Page's Reading facility, which was formerly the Miles Aircraft Company.
Handley Page optimised the Herald design for operations from underdeveloped airfields with operators which it thought would prefer piston rather than turbine power.

 Handley Page - History
Frederick (later Sir Frederick) Handley Page first experimented with and built several biplanes and monoplanes at premises in Woolwich, Fambridge and Barking Creek, before settling on works at Cricklewood in North London and Radlett Aerodrome, Hertfordshire.
His company, Handley Page Ltd, became the first public company to build aircraft when it was founded on 17th June 1909.
In subsequent years, Handley page built a number of research aircraft to investigate supersonic flight, new wing shapes and tail-less configurations, some of which were incorporated in the Victor bomber, test flown for the first time on 24th December 1952.

The Herald fleet grew to a total of 11 during the 1980s with the award of night-time contracts for the British Post Office and major international express parcel companies, as well as the development of ad hoc charter operations.
In the early 90's Channel Express started replacing the Herald with Fokker F27-500 and -600 aircraft to meet Stage 3 night time noise restrictions, whilst offering payloads in excess of 6,000kgs and faster sector times.
In 1991 Channel Express was instrumental in placing the first Lockheed L188 Electras on the British Register and in achieving ICAO Stage 3 noise certification of the type, leading to its success on contract overnight parcel operations throughout Europe in the 15,000kgs payload sector.

The findings have been interesting but the disappointment is that nearly all of the films concern the Handley Page Dart Herald and I am now confident that remainder will not contain any Miles or pre-war film of Aviation in Berkshire.
As a result of further efforts by Don Currie this was reduced to £150 but obviously this sort of charge is out of the question for our venture.
Regarding the Handley Page films we have, Harry Fraser-Mitchell, Vice-President of the Handley Page Society, has kindly offered to help me identify the films which carry no dates, places or credits or titles.

Hopes were high set, but orders were not forthcoming, although several airline companies, mainly American, and the Indian Air Force showed considerable interest.
As early as January 1958, with the prototype having flown about 200 hours, the company decided to halt development since it was felt that the ATL.90 competitors (like the Handley Page Dart Herald and Fokker Friendship, both larger and well underway in their test programme) would be too hard to beat.
Production would have been a problem for Aviation Traders as well, since they lacked both the skills and the space for this.
