		Handsome Lake said he had been visited by four spiritual messengers who gave him instructions on how the people were supposed to live - to be thankful and continue the thanksgiving ceremonies, to respect other humans and everything in the natural world, to honor the family and refrain from abuse of spouses.
		Handsome Lake recognized the need to raise the material standards of the Iroquois and to adjust to the existence of a dominant white society, and he backed economic development and peace with the United States.
		Handsome Lake's influence was strongest among the Senecas, Onondagas, and Oneidas of New York, although it spread to the Wyandots and Iroquois of the Sandusky in Ohio, whom he visited in 1806.

		Beulah's crafty indie rock sound isn't as lo-fi as many make it out to be and while Kurosky's a big fan of Pavement, Handsome Western States is filled with a different kind of soul and a great big heart.
		From the lazy shimmy of "I Love John, She Loves Paul" to the punky good time of "Disco: The Secretaries Blues" and the countrified lament "Queen of the Populists," Handsome Western States is a solid introduction to Beulah's warm pop style.
		Reflecting upon teenage love is always memorable, and Beulah makes some of the confusion of those days seem OK. Handsome Western States is a sunburst of good music and as songwriters, the members of Beulah are onto something good.

		Faced with the problem of having a record to plan an tour for, but no band, the two were forced to put together a line-up which now includes Steve La Folette, Pat Noel, and Steve St. Cin.
		Handsome Western States, Beulah's 1998 release on Elephant 6 Records, heralded handsome praise and a bounty of comparisons to Pavement.

		Handsome Western States has it's charm, but it was a quantum leap between it and When Your Heartstrings Break.
		At least the sting of their passing is eased somewhat by Miles' forthcoming solo record, which will essentially be the fifth Beulah record, and the A Good Band Is Easy To Kill DVD out this Fall which was filmed during their final tour.

		It has also been suggested that the situation would improve if there were less of an imbalance in the faculty, but there is uniform dislike (or at least stated dislike) for having affirmative action for the anti-extreme-left.
		Since there is proof positive of repression of the anti-extreme-left in my university and my department, I propose that the State should insist that every hiring committee have at least one anti-extreme-left person on it.

		Handsome Western States is one of my favorite guilty pleasures -- an album terribly recorded, inconsistently performed, and with some lyrics that make Promise Ring singer Davey von Bohlen look like the finest logician of our times.
		Heartstrings, which adds studio time and something like 20 musicians, doesn't have the serendipitous magic of Handsome, which was made by three people with an eight-track.

	Molars: if language is a city, take a bus to the suburbs
		Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin are a fantastic guitar pop band, and have released one of the better straight-ahead indie rock albums I've heard this year, "Broom".
		I am not lying when I say that "Broom" is on par with (and has sonic similarities to) Beulah's "Handsome Western States" and "When Your Heartstrings Break", as well as the Shins' "Oh Inverted World".
		The lead singer (who is either John Robert, Jonathan, Philip, or Tom- I can't tell) definitely sounds a bit like James Mercer and a bit like Miles Kurosky at times, without really being any kind of vocal clone of either those two (just in that same timbral ballpark).

		Miles and Bill recorded a song every month and a half for 16 months in the beginning, using only guitar and drums, and recording in their offices, living rooms, bathrooms and hallways onto a Maxell cassette.
		The resulting album, Handsome Western States (E6-014) was released at the end of 1997.
		Shortly after the release of this CD, they assembled a full band: Miles Kurosky (guitar and lead vocals), Steve LaFolette (bass and vocals), Pat Noel (keyboards and guitar), Steve St. Cin (drums) and Bill Swan (trumpet, guitar and vocals).

		Besides Kurosky and Swan, the disc's only other musician was Anne Mellinger, who added violin and backing vocals to a few tracks.
		The dense arrangements add sparkle to chiming pop like "Score From Augusta," "Calm Go the Wild Seas," "Sunday Under Glass" and "The Aristocratic Swells," while Kurosky's lyrics ramble through an elusive spew of syllable-stuffed images, touching on motifs of history, religion, cultural mythology and fame.
