The word hangetsu may be translated to mean "half moon" or "half month".
Since many students find this stance challenging to consistently perform correctly it is perhaps not surprising that this kata is rarely seen in tournaments.
In any case, Hangetsu is also noted for its early sequences requiring the application of increasing tension, its one knuckle punches, and its use of the half moon crescent kicks.

Hangetsu is a version of the older kata Seisan or Seishan.The history of the kata is not the focus of this article, but needless to say, the "hangetsu dachi" we use today is not found in Seisan or Seishan.
Sanchin and hangetsu, on the other hand, give more variety in the directions in which force can be created pushing and pulling simply because of the way the legs are arranged and used.

Hangetsu kata has various possible applications, some of which are only apparent if you look at Goju versions or something like Aragaki Seisan (a predecessor kata).
Hangetsu dachi always seemed to me a waste of time Shotokan deeper/wider imitation of the very useful sanchin dachi.
In practice no one I have ever seen uses it for sparring or paired exercises (although Keinisuke Enoeda used to claim in his kata books that it was "ideal for close quarter fighting"), which probably tells you something about its perceived practicality.

 Kata - Hangetsu
This kata was originally called Seishan (Naha-te Origin) but has become known as Hangetsu in the Shotokan syllabus due to its 'half-moon' or cresent shape movements in the stance.
The Hangetsu stance is useful for gaining entry to your opponents position and the kata teaches coordinated hand and foot techniques with breathing.
Although he taught in the Tomari province so one could assume his basis of Hangetsu was Tomari-te, there is a wide opinion that it is in fact a Naha-te origin.

There is a very similar kata practiced in the south of China, and different versions of this kata in Okinawa.
The name of this kata was changed into Hangetsu, which means "half moon".

It's my understanding that Hangetsu is the Japanese name for the Seisan kata, a very old kata numerous versions of which are practiced by a wide variety of Okinawan styles.
It was one of the original 15 (or 14 I can't quite remember), Kata taught by Funakoshi.
This kata Sehshan is what was transformed into Hangetsu in later years by Funakoshi and the JKA.

Also, your experience in Shotokan and whether the answer is "earth-shattering" is irrelevant due to the fact that his teaching style and ideologies in teaching are completely different.
The fact of the matter is that the kata Hangetsu is taught two belt levels above mine and it has always been his teaching style to make his students focus on the material at that current belt while going over the material from the past.
More to the point of the thread, I think I know how Hangetsu dachi evolved (see my earlier posts) and I do not think they reflect well on Shotokan, as the reasons have nothing to do with practicality and a lot to do with appearance.

Hangetsu is the only kata in Shotokan which seems to have no relation to any other kata in the Shotokan system.
It originated in China, and is the only kata in the Shotokan system to be handed down by the Naha-te school.
The name Hangetsu was given by Funakoshi because of the semi-circular leg and arm movements, in the shape of a crescent moon.

When I wrote about this I found a blogger who has a blog about his path to Shodan in Shotokan and he has filmed himself practising Hangetsu and has written about it.

The Kata has one special breathing methods (Ibuki) and a determined manner of tensions (in the Shotokan-ryu).
She was taken by master Funakoshi into the 15 of basic Kata of the style and renamed in Japan in "Hangetsu".

Rather than thinking turn the toes in, or point the knees in think of it as closing the groin area.

Hangetsu is a Kata believed to come from the Wutang School.
The Kata revolves around the Hangetsu Dachi, a stance noted for it's effectiveness against groin kicks (Kin Geri).
From the point of view of more mature (older!) students, Hangetsu is a good Kata because it does not require the suppleness of youth to complete it!

Even Hangetsu, which has distant relatives in the Goju System called Seishan, actually comes from a Shuri kata that looks just like Hangetsu by the same name.
Like Hangetsu above, this kata also has a name that is counting the number of uses of different techniques in non-repeating instances, in my opinion.
Gan means "rock." Kaku refers to the little white cranes that can be found throughout Japan, picking around the trash that the Japanese throw into the many urban rivers and streams.
