  The Creswicke's of Hanham Court
The name "Hanham Abbots" is derived from the Abbots of Keynsham Abbey who between 1330 and 1539 owned the original Hanham Court and much of the surrounding land.
This, of course, does not correspond to the present postal district of Hanham, for even places like Mount Hill Road have Hanham as its postal address where as the north side of the High Street and the area to its north is in the ecclesiastical parish of Kingswood.
Hanham was in his title and so he claimed to be Lord of Hanham.

Hanham Lock is the first lock east of Netham where boats leave the Bristol Floating Harbour.
In front of this house once stood Hanham Mills, an archway over the towpath being all that remained of the Mills until 1897, when the Hanham Abbotts Parish Church had the archway demolished due to its poor state of repair.

He moved his residence to Hanham Abbots where, certainly from 1791 to 1799, he was a principle inhabitant and regularly attended the annual meeting of the church wardens at St. Georges chapel to order the affairs of the parish.
The Bristol Brass Co. resented his having left their service and were determined to try to stop him becoming a competitor; they lowered their price for spelter from £74 to £48 per ton.
About 1779 this new method was in use at Emerson's works at Hanham, but it was not until well into the nineteenth century that the new method came into general use.

In the beginning the residents of Hanham were seen by Dr Perrott who came once a week from Kingswood in his pony and trap, which he left tied up outside the premises of a wet fish shop (Cartwrights fish mongers).
There was a public outcry and people petitioned to have him returned to Hanham, because his leaving had left them without a resident doctor.
He did not return to hanham until 1945, at the end of the war.

The name Lear (sometimes recorded as 'Leer' or 'Loor') occurs in the registers of Hanham, Gloucestershire back to at least the end of the 1600's, although the early entries are quite sporadic and not clearly connected.
William Lear appears to have been baptised at Hanham as the son of James Loor in 1748, and married Hester Willis at Bitton in 1776.
Their decendants spread from Hanham to South Wales, Wiltshire and Australia, and an outline of the descendant tree is attached.
