Henry "Hank" Jones (born July 31, 1918) was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi and grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, where he studied piano at an early age and came under the influence of Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum.
By the age of 13 Jones was performing locally in Michigan and Ohio.
In the early 1980s Jones held a residency as a solo pianist at the Cafe Ziegfeld and made a tour of Japan, where he performed and recorded with George Duvivier and Sonny Stitt.

Jones has also experienced his share of piano duos, with the likes of Tommy Flanagan - with whom he became acquainted when both were developing around the Detroit area - George Shearing, and John Lewis.

 Great Jazz Trio
Hank Jones was born on July 31, 1918 in Pontiac, Michigan.
Hank was hoping to be stimulated creatively by the experience of performing with musicians from a different generation (Ron was then 39 and Tony was 31).
Hank described his own philosophy of music as follows: "I want to be an interpreter of great music." Hank explained that as a performer, the songs he plays get deciphered, interpreted, and expressed in his own unique style while still paying respect to the composer.

Pianist Hank Jones is the eldest and least well-known of the three great Jones brothers of jazz.
The late Elvin Jones, Hank's junior by nine years, revolutionized jazz drumming in the early 1960s as a member of John Coltrane's legendary quartet.
Hank Jones may not be a household name, but his fellow musicians revere him.

 NPR's Jazz Profiles: Hank Jones
According to Hank Jones, "when you listen to a pianist, each note should have an identity, each note should have a soul of its own." For nearly six decades Jones has taken his own words to heart, playing every one of his notes with a unique and deeply personal style.
Actively encouraged to play music by their parents were oldest son Hank, his younger brother, cornetist band leader, composer and arranger Thad Jones, and the baby of the family, drummer Elvin Jones, the poly rhythmic force behind John Coltrane's classic quartet.
During junior high school, Jones used to listen to Fats Waller records on the radio before he left for school and Waller's insistent melodies and driving beat had Jones dancing all the way to class.

CD Review of Hank Jones - For My Father on Justin Time @ jazzreview.com
Jones has been winning many of the jazz polls within the past two years after decades of relative obscurity when he was making a living as a studio musician (though still recording his Great Piano Trio at the time) and as a CBS television staff musician, interestingly enough at the recommendation of Andy Williams.
Even as Jones approaches the age of 87, and despite his long successful career in an endeavor that burns out many musicians before they exit their twenties, he remembers the sacrifices, the values and the losses of his father, for whom he obviously held a deep and abiding respect.
Hank Jones had this to say about his father when I interviewed him: “My first performance I can remember was being on the stage to recite a poem when I was three or four.

Waterloo Records - George Jones : Salutes Hank Williams
Jones' second tribute to Williams, MY FAVORITES OF HANK WILLIAMS, was recorded two years later, after Jones had moved to the United Artists label.
Of Jones' two Hank Williams albums, GEORGE JONES SALUTES HANK WILIAMS is truer to Williams' original recordings; the band is more vibrant and more prominently featured than on the later album, and Jones' vocals are similarly more enthusiastic.
Jones makes these songs his own, whether he is playfully twisting the chorus of "Honky Tonkin'" or moaning the blues on "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)." Because this album shares no song titles with MY FAVORITES, the two make a nice matched set.

The combination of Hank Jones and Oliver Nelson, along with sidemen such as Clark Terry, Ernie Royal, and Jerry Dodgion, would normally have one expecting a great release.
Unfortunately, Jones plays an electric harpsichord on seven of the 11 tracks from this mid-1960s LP, plus there are several dated pop numbers from the era, including "Winchester Cathedral" (though it has a campy pesudo-Satchmo vocal by Terry) and the bland "Mas Que Nada (Pow Pow Pow)," which has long since worn out its welcome.
Jones' playing, Nelson's arrangements and his originals (including "Happenings" and "Lou's Good Due Blues"), and the work of the various sidemen is all first rate.

Hank Jones (elder brother of Elvin and Thad) is one of the elder statesmen of Jazz piano.
Unfairly, his reputation as an accompanist (mainly due to 5 years with Ella Fitzgerald) has always outshone that of his abilities as a soloist, despite a fine string of trio dates that stretches from the 50s to today.
Pairing Jones' then regular trio of Dave Holland and Keith Copeland with Ken Peplowski on half the tracks, it's a gem of a session.

What octogenarian pianist Hank Jones may lack in terms of innovation he more than makes up for in terms of the sheer joy with which he plays and the pleasure that he brings to the listener.
Jones doesn’t need to dazzle us with his technique because he not only knows these songs cold, he has a deep seated understanding of them and a real affinity for them, and so do all the members of this trio.
One has to listen to Jones play in order to understand that this affinity means everything in terms of the relationship between listener and performer.
