  Interview with Mercyful Fate
Hank: It was a bit more, well, it had more of a punky edge, you know, we played about four to seven concerts with King Diamond as the singer, that was basically in Denmark, in 1980, 1981.
Hank: Mike Denner is not playing tonight, he decided to be back with his child, in Kopenhagen, which was something that also happened with the US tour last year.
Hank: No, no. Because that would be silly, that was not how the music was written, it would not be the right move, it would be too trendy.

Hank took the time to answer a number of questions and we present them to you now.
Hank - MF can not exist without King Diamond or I so would be impossible anyway, but sure we are all kind of connected to that group.
Hank - As for now it is on hold but we have not disbanded and we still have another record in the contract...so who knows...I think it will surface very natural again sometime.

HANK: Of course, but getting the solid line up was naturally choice to have the dummer, Bjarn T Holm, cos we live close to each other and we have been friends since the 80's.
HANK: It will come out on the 26th of January thru a label called Escapi… They are going to take care of the whole thing, by distributing all around Europe and there will be a distribution company in North America called Nevara as well.
HANK: Of course that was such a tiny thing after all which was turned upside down by the press by exaggerating the whole thing.

Mercyful Fate, formed in 1977 as a punk band (Hank Shermann was in the original line-up).They had three songs featured on the semi-famous Pære Punk compilation LP : "Dreams", "I do what I wanna do", "Magazine" (which later appeared on the 1980 album as "Zombie People" with new and improved lyrics)
Shermann and Diamond refused, leading to the end of Brats relationship with CBS, while Yenz and Monroe left and continued for a little while with The New Brats.
The remaining members Hank Shermann, King Diamond and Carsten Van Der Volsing recorded a new demo in March, changing the bandname into Mercyful Fate since the music was much heavier than anything Brats had ever done. One month later King and Shermann helped out Michael Denner on his new project Danger Zone.

Mike Wead has really engrained himself as part of the M.F. sound, and works to update Shermann's classic eighties riffs into something that could be deemed retro, but is so slick and sounds so good, it's obvious from which decade it was born.
I can't believe how fast this stuff makes it out either, 9 being recorded about two months before it was released, a true testament to the prolific nature of this band, and probably also related to wanting to get this on the market before the summer festivals.
I can still pick out which tracks were penned by the King, and tend to prefer the more intricate Shermann material, but it's all good, and after snagging the opening slot for Metallica this summer, the Fate just may become a household name again in the coming millennium.

Despite the fact that Mercyful Fate has been an active band since their return to the scene in 1993, MF guitarist Hank Shermann always seems to be able to find time for side projects and bands to play in (two such projects were Gutrix and Virus 7).
Force Of Evil pairs Shermann with his old MF guitarist pal Michael Denner (who, unlike Shermann, had left MF some time ago), alongside a rhythm section made up of guys well known to MF or King Diamond fans, and topped by respected Iron Fire vocalist Martin Steene.
Shermann's aforementioned past projects have been short-lived, but Force Of Evil looks to be a longer-term proposition.

Hank Shermann and Michael Denner keep their progressive rock tendencies reigned in while still delivering plenty of the neo-classical feel that gives the music its atmosphere, and King Diamond uses his vocal range to great theatrical effect.
Fate's sound and attitude were highly influential on later gothic/fl metal bands, especially in Europe, and Don't Break the Oath consistently encapsulates their appeal.

FORCE OF EVIL is the new band led by the original MERCYFUL FATE guitar duo, namely Hank Shermann and Michael Denner (the former still a member of MF).
Apart from singer Martin Steen (IRONFIRE) the rest of the quintet is also related to the KING DIAMOND/MERCYFUL FATE family as bassist Hal Patino is a KING DIAMOND member and drummer Bjarne T. Holm is the bassist of MERCYFUL FATE from 1995 and onwards.
After all FoE’s main songwriter Hank Shermann is also responsible for almost half the compositions of MF (in fact all the music of the “Mercyful Fate” EP and their first full length “Melissa” is credited to him).

Danish heavy rock band Zoser Mez was a short-lived enterprise made notable by the involvement of original Mercyful Fate legends Hank Shermann and Michael Denner on guitars.

And, coincidental to their renewed collaboration or not, Shermann and Denner soon found themselves resurrecting Mercyful Fate with old chum King Diamond in 1993, spelling the end of Zoser Mez.

But their reign on top was short-lived, as King's Satanic views weren't shared by the rest of the band, and Shermann's desire to play a different form of music forced the breakup of the band around 1985.
Diamond took Denner and MF bassist with him and formed his own group, King Diamond, while Shermann formed a hard rock band called Fate.
Several years later, Shermann and Denner (long since departed from King's band) hooked up together in a little-known project called Zoser Mez, which may well have precipitated getting Mercyful Fate back together, which they finally did in 1993, featuring all of the original members except drummer Kim Ruzz.

This schedule had to be most taxing on vocalist Diamond, whose ultra-high-pitch bellowing and novel-length lyrical additions to both of his bands made for a laborious schedule.
Recorded during a frenzy of activity during the late '90s, Dead Again was presumably thrown together rather quickly, as Mercyful Fate and King Diamond's solo outfit were both releasing new discs at a furious rate.

Mercyful Fate: King Diamond (vocals); Hank Shermann, Michael Denner (guitar); Timi Hansen (bass); Morten Nielsen (drums).
There's even a harpsichord-laced sequel to that album's title track, called "Is That You, Melissa." Despite the passage of eight years, vocalist King Diamond, guitarists Michael Denner and Hank Shermann, and bassist Timi Hansen recapture the same spark that made their first two albums classics in the metal realm.
While the atmosphere is not as malevolent as that of their previous release DON'T BREAK THE OATH, Diamond's lyrics and performances are less cartoonish than before, and these songs generally feature the memorable hooks that are one of the group's trademarks.
