Hanmun was used by Korean scholar-officials up to the early 20th century.
Early creation stories and histories were also written in Hanmun, including the Samguk sagi (Annals of the Three Kingdoms) and Samguk yusa (Accounts of the Three Kingdoms).
In a park in Namwon there is still a shrine to Chun-hyang, not far from her home and the splendid pavilion where Yi Myongyong stood when he first saw her on the swing.

Rather than having Chinese and Japanese speakers rely solely on the Romanization, the powers that be have been including copious amounts of Chinese characters.
From new road signs, to subway markers, to neighborhood locater maps (which are becoming a big thing here), the *hanmun* place names are everywhere.
Also, it is an excellent opportunity to have constant visual reinforcement for those who are learning *hanmun*.

Prior to Hangul, all of the Korean literati used the Hanja writing system, which were traditional Chinese characters with Korean pronunciation and meaning, and used a written language known as Hanmun, which was basically Classical Chinese, for official court documents.
Hangul was offcially re-recognized in the late 19th century, and everyday written use of Hanja and Hanmun eventually came to end slowly in the latter half of the 20th century.
During the Joseon Dynasty, a centralized administrative system was installed based on Confucian yangban scholars who acted as the counsellors to the king and made up most of the officer class of the royal army.

I write this with some sorrow, because I have always been an admirer of Korea's hanmun culture, and I believe that the cultural cost --in terms of understanding Korean history, literature, and values-- has already been and will continue to be great.
One cannot ignore hanmun culture in researching and teaching on the totality of Korean life and history.
When one considers that Vietnamese hanmun civilization did not reach even central Vietnam (Hue, Danang) until the 15th century, and that it did not occupy the Khmer areas of the lower Mekong river valley until the 18th century, one sees that the cultural forces favoring hanmun culture in those areas were proportionally weaker.

The use of this very complicated writing system caused very serious problems, because Chinese (monosyllabic) and Korean (polysyllabic) are rather different languages.
The Koreans adopted the Chinese writing around the first centuries A.D., and the classical Chinese language (in Korean hanmun) became an official language.
This process also took place in the standard (Seoul) Korean having assumed the shape of purification of its vocabulary from the so-called difficult, actually loaned, non-Korean (including hanmun) words and expressions.

This time there were four available to me: novels, poetry, hanmun literature (Korean literature written in classical Chinese), and oral literature.
Hanmun was out of the question, as I felt that learning classical written Chinese would be too daunting (little did I know that I would have to learn it anyway).
I dismissed poetry right away as well, because I felt that poetic analysis amounted to little more than splitting hairs.

On the Kanji issue, I spend much of my time during research with Korean language sources.
Koreans have, in many instances, stopped using hanja (kanji) and hanmun (Chinese writing), and have relied exclusively on the Korean alphabet (hangul).
This has created a real problem with homonyms.
