Sie wurde in den 1970er Jahren vor allem durch ihre Auftritte in Filmen des Regisseurs Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982) bekannt.
Auf der Leinwand war Hanna Schygulla erstmals in dem Kurzfilm Der Bräutigam, die Komödiantin und der Zuhälter (1968) von Jean-Marie Straub zu sehen.
Nach dem Tod von Rainer Werner Fassbinder trat Hanna Schygulla in den 1980er Jahren erfolgreich in französischen, italienischen und amerikanischen Filmen auf.
