Hannelore Kohl, the wife of the former German chancellor, took her own life after years of suffering from a rare illness that made her allergic to light, aides to Helmut Kohl said on Thursday.
Hannelore Kohl had suffered from a rare allergy to light since 1993, sparked by an allergic reaction to penicillin, that had kept her a virtual prisoner in her home.
Kohl went on to become modern Germany's longest-serving leader, ruling fo 16 years, and Hannelore, slim, blonde and elegant, was at the side of her massively built husband throughout the dramatic events following the fall of the Berlin Wall when he oversaw the reunification of the two Germanys.
