  HANNES ALFVEN Hannes Alfven
Hannes Alfven, winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physics, acknowledged as one of creative and intuitive intellect's of the 20th century, died peacefully Sunday evening, April 2, 1995 in Stockholm, Sweden.
Alfven was the first to predict (in 1963) the large scale filamentary structure of the universe, a discovery that confounded astrophysicists in 1991 and added to the woes of Big Bang cosmology.
Hannes Alfven has played a central role in the development of several modern fields of physics, including plasma physics, the physics of charged particle beams, and interplanetary and magnetospheric physics.

Alfven was educated at Uppsala University and in 1940 joined the staff of the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.
In 1939 Alfven published his theory of magnetic storms and auroral displays in the atmosphere, which immensely influenced the modern theory of the magnetosphere (the region of the Earth's magnetic field).
Alfven was an early supporter of "plasma cosmology," a concept that challenges the big-bang model of the origin of the universe.

Hannes Alfven pioneered the development of MHD, the study of the motion of an electrically conducting fluid interacting with magnetic fields, and, in particular, the subject of plasma physics, the branch of MHD in which the fluid under study is a highly ionized gas consisting of nearly equal numbers of positively and negatively charged particles.
Alfven was chiefly concerned with plasmas in stars, in the geomagnetic field, and in interplanetary and interstellar space, but his theories were basic to the study of laboratory plasmas encountered in the development of controlled thermonucelar fusion.
Alfven pioneered theoretical research in the field of magnetohydrodynamics, the study of the interaction of conducting fluids and magnetic fields, for which he received the 1970 Nobel Prize in physics with Louis Neel.
