The 11th Hour Web Magazine - Movie Review - Hannibal
There is no reasonable reply to any of these questions, and that is the glory of Hannibal, the novel that finally stated who the true hero of this sick and sordid tale was.
The story of Hannibal is morbid, decadent, at times very depressing; Hannibal Lector, the man, is attractive, charismatic, and it is the collision of these two sentiments that claimed Clarice as well as fans of the novel -- and now, the movie.
Walking down the streets of Florence, Hannibal's true nature is never detected in his unremarkable guise; Starling, on the other hand, always attempts to strive away from her unremarkable background and upbringing.

Hannibal (2001) Movie Review - The Hollywood News
Hannibal also lacks the emotional and psychological core of Silence of the Lambs, substituting it for visual flare and buckets of gore.
The climax of the picture (which is in keeping with the novel) is silly bordering on absurd, but I had fun with it.
Hannibal portrays a much bleaker look at the world than Silence of the Lambs did.

Cinephiles Discussion Forums: Hannibal, compared to the book
Also in Hannibal the novel, Harris makes very complex characters such as Macon’s bodybuilding sister Margot and he had mason mutilated in a way that it would be impossible to use on film without animatronics, which he probably knew would look fake.
In the novel Hannibal, unlike in SOTL, most of the plot links the events together with memories and thought of the characters, where it would need an extremely good script writer to portray such as Hannibal’s past, his sister, his involvement in WW2, and - what I find amazing - his ‘memory palace’.
Hannibal was 563 pages in paperback, which I’ll tell you is nearly impossible to squeeze into a 2 and a half hour time slot.

Hannibal is a sequel to Silence of the Lambs by way of continuing the Hannibal/Clarice Starling storyline.
Hannibal is more horror than its predecessor, and it not as concerned with getting into its character's heads.
Whether this was deliberate (in order to prevent anyone from ever wanting another novel in the series) or not is a point of debate, but the fact remains that the movie is based on what is generally considered to be a shoddy source material.

While historical novels by their nature are of course permitted to take liberties with embellishing facts and details, I don't think this should be at the expense of actually changing known facts.
Although I applaud Leckie for writing a novelization of Hannibal in the first place, in my opinion he misses the opportunity to do it full justice, which is a sad disappointment.
Hannibal correctly foresaw that his people would eventually be swallowed by the Romans, and therefore decided to go on the offensive.

Hannibal Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
Though "Hannibal" never comes near the lows of the more dubious entries of the 'serial killer thriller' genre (such as "The Watcher"), it is rather pedestrian in how it handles its two beloved characters.
Instead of focusing on the psyche of Clarice, as well as her riveting mental and verbal spars with Hannibal Lecter, which gave "Silence of the Lambs" much of its emotional resonance, "Hannibal" is your by-the-numbers catch-the-killer-before-he-catches-you type of story, with complexity of its heroine being reduced to a two-dimensional tough-talker with a gun.
Taking place ten years after Hannibal (Hopkins) left the sly telephone message that he was 'having an old friend for dinner', former FBI-superstar Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore of "Magnolia", stepping into Foster's shoes) is an agent under fire in the aftermath of a botched joint FBI and DEA takedown that results in five fatalities.

 Hannibal - Movie Preview
It was, of course, an adaptation of Thomas Harris’ bestselling novel, Hannibal, a follow-up to The Silence of the Lambs.
But Hannibal is not really a sequel to Lambs: it is more of a re-examination of the previous film’s now-legendary central character, Dr Hannibal Lecter, a figure who has entered modern demonology alongside Dracula and Nosferatu (many of whose tastes he shares).
Given the success of the original novel, which was turned into an Oscar-winning film by Jonathan Demme in 1991, there was obviously a lot of pressure for a sequel.

Horror Movie Review | Hannibal (2001) Anthony Hopkins, Julianne Moore
Hannibal opens with a violent and bloody marketplace shootout involving Clarice Starling and an FBI Task Force versus a drug dealer and her gang.
The novel "Hannibal" was not about Starling fighting termination by the agency she loves so much, or being crucified by the media and her bosses.
Hannibal the movie didn't see it that way, and although the "love" angle between Lecter and Starling is approached, it's never developed, and the movie resorts to gratuitous bloodletting and an absurd ending that had no reason to be except to segue into yet another sequel, something Harris has no intentions of writing.
