Hanoi Rocks is back after 17 years and it's been almost as long since I've listened to them.
It seemed like Hanoi Rocks was around only long enough to teach the stewed Crue, Guns 'N' Roses and droves of others how it was done before fading away with only the occasional solo effort to keep the memory alive.
They have taken all that is HR and thrown in their personal maturity, musical sense and knowledge allowing the classic Hanoi Rocks sound to thrive and flourish without sounding crass, classless, or stuck in any particular time period.

In Finland, however, Hanoi Rocks are known as the Finnish rock band who at their time had come closest to real international fame, only much later giving way to such groups as Stratovarius, Nightwish and HIM.

Every other Hanoi album is of course deserving of its place in the Holy pantheon of pure, killer Rock and Roll, and rightly so, but Back to Mystery City for me is their highest achievement.
Hanoi truly were a 24/7 lifestyle band, both for members of the band and audience alike, and with the subsequent sad demise of Razzle, Stiv Bators and Johnny Thunders, Hanoi today are the last ones left from this era.

From the opening beat of “Tragedy” (on '81’s Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks) to their first and last U.S. hit, (a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revivial’s “Up Around the Bend”), Hanoi Rocks had a sound uniquely defined by McCoy’s bent, Peter-Gunn-style riffing and lead singer Monroe’s wicked harmonica, saxophone, and gravelly drag-queen vocals.
Monroe has always worn his rock star’s tiara with gangly, self-consciousness bluster, but it’s more uncomfortable to watch now that he’s older, and you know he’s not going to grow out of it.
