Syracuse was named after the original Syracuse, a city on the eastern coast of Sicily, Italy, which shares some similarities with this one, including a formerly-important salt industry and a neighboring town of Salina.
Syracuse's cable television provider is Time Warner Cable, which, as a part of its regular and digital offerings, provides a 24-hour local news channel (News 10 Now), local sports channel, public access channel, and an additional PBS channel.

 Hanover Square
During the early days of Syracuse, because Hanover Square was the major transfer point on the Canal, it became not only the city's commercial district but also its primary meeting place.
In 1865, when Abraham Lincoln's remains were traveling through Syracuse on their way to internment in Springfield Illinois, thousands came to Hanover Square to hear eulogies for the fallen leader.
Because Hanover Square was so compact, and the lots so small, it was not easily incorporated into the large urban renewal projects that leveled whole city blocks just a few yards away.

The partnership was initiated in response to a challenge, issued by Congressman James T. Walsh (R-Syracuse) in 1999, to revitalize neighborhoods in Syracuse and reclaim the City's vacant buildings that are having the greatest blighting impact.
