At age fourteen he was apprenticed to a painter of waterschilderen, large-scale scenes painted on canvas using opaque watercolor or tempera.
According to Karel Van Mander, Bol's large watercolors were so widely copied that he turned instead to making miniatures in bodycolor on parchment, which he promoted as independent cabinet paintings.
Bol's works combined artifice and naturalism in formats ranging from extensive panoramas to intimate views of the Flemish countryside, usually including small figures enacting a biblical or mythological scene, an allegory, or a genre scene.

Hans Bol - Panoramic Landscape with Parable of The Rich Man and view of the city of Brussels
In the breadth of its panoramic scope, this miniature, in which the influence of Brueghel the Elder is mingled with Bol's typically intimate and tactile rendering of naturalistic details, remains as appealing to the modern viewer as it must have been at the time of its creation.
The pride and vanity of his aspirations are underscored by the presence of the peacock, while a turkey, a species imported from the New World which quickly became associated with stupidity, adds a timely note to the scene while introducing subtle political connotations.

Landscape with the Fall of Icarus by BOL, Hans
In spite of its small size, the watercolour by Hans Bol, a Netherlandish Mannerist, is a marvellous example of the art of landscape.
Hans Bol chose the Icarus theme on several occasions.
It was also the subject of one of his paintings, which was described in detail and highly praised by Carel van Mander in the 17th century.

According to Karel Van Mander, Bol's large watercolors were widely copied.
Despite the war with Spain and periods of religious unrest that caused frequent upheavals in his life, Bol remained one of the Netherlands' most prolific and successful landscapists.

Landscape with the Fall of Icarus by BOL, Hans
A story pitting youth against age and brashness against self-knowledge was an ideal theme for an era which loved to moralize.
This miniature is all the more important, because it probably reproduces the painting referred to by Van Mander, which may have been his masterpiece.
Consequently, Bol ought to be viewed not only as a superior miniature painter, but above all as an important artist who played a key role in the development of landscape art.

Its emergence is therefore a significant addition to the very important group of drawings by Rembrandt, depicting the buildings to be found along the routes of the various walks that he seems so often to have made during the 1650s, from Amsterdam to the surrounding villages and towns.
Bol has based his image on the version of the story provided by St. John (19: 31-34), who includes several episodes and details not described in the other Gospels.
It appears that Bol must have been particularly satisfied with this composition, as he produced several other versions of it during the course of his career: in addition to the painting of 1593 there survive two gouaches, dated 1587 and 1590, now in the Rhode Island School of Design, and Budapest Museum of Fine Arts.

The contours of the figures are drawn in pen and the intervening space is carefully filled in with water colour and bodycolour.
Avercamp probably borrowed the use of aquarelle and gouache from Jan Brueghel the Elder and the Flemish emigrants living in Amsterdam, such as Hans Bol, Jacob Savery and David Vinckboons, whose works he had got to know during his apprenticeship with Pieter Isaacsz.
Avercamp was one of the first Dutch draughtsmen who in the early 17th century developed this aquarelle technique specifically as a separate, independent art form.

Landscape with the Story of Venus and Adonis (Getty Museum)
Hans Bol painted this unusual miniature in two parts: the central landscape, painted on parchment mounted on wood, and the framing design, painted directly on wood.
In the frame, Bol combined the cartouches and trophies of a three-dimensional picture frame with illusionistic borders reminiscent of manuscript illumination.
His materials--opaque color and gold paint on parchment--also follow the tradition of manuscript illumination.
