Orsted’s discovery (1820) of piperine, one of the pungent components of pepper, was an important contribution to chemistry, as was his preparation of metallic aluminum in 1825.

The Danish physicist and chemist Hans Christian Orsted (1763-1851) discovered the relationship between electricity and magnetism in a very simple experiment.
French mathematician and physicist Andre-Marie Ampere (1775-1836) confirmed Orsted’s discovery that a coil of wire acted like a magnet when a current is passed through it.
In September, whilst elaborating on the earlier work of Hans Christian Orsted, the French astronomer Dominique Francois Jean Arago (1786-1853) demonstrated that the passage of an electric current through a cylindrical spiral of copper wire caused it to attract iron filings.

Engraved portrait of Orsted (1777-1851) who in 1820 discovered the relationship between electricity and magnetism by setting up a very simple experiment; he demonstrated that a wire carrying a current could deviate a magnetised compass needle by ninety degrees.
Whilst unable to suggest a satisfactory explanation for this phenomena, his discovery did bring about the study of electromagnetism by others.

It is good to remember that it was only in 1820 that a connection was first noted serendipitously by Orsted between electric & magnetic phenomena.
I suppose there are no hints of any one else noticing this before Orsted?
